“Aussies identify with that hardcore US thing, which didn’t happen in Britain,” Franklin said. “But there are a lot of Anglophiles here, so it’s like a UK band singing about petrol stations.”

It’s a sound Franklin traced to one specific meeting point: “Somewhere between SST and 4AD was our Sweredriver,” he said, naming Black Flag’s Nervous Breakdown and the Cocteau Twins’ Heaven or Las Vegas as equal touchstones.

“Initially we were very influenced by the American bands Sonic Youth, and Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr and then getting signed to Creation Records we knew a bunch of the bands on that label. We first played with My Bloody Valentine in 1986 and the guys from Ride but it was a different sound. That sound crept into our sound as well because everyone was bouncing off each other. It was a kind of healthy competition. It was a healthy sonic sparring in a way,” he laughs.
