incuriosity
Men are not curious about me.
They sit across from me,
staring. If they’re bold,
they might
comment on my
appearance.
You’re so beautiful, the words
slither out as if
on forked tongues.
They expect these words to
move me.
I am not moved.
I am not moved, because
I am not seen.
Which is oxymoronic, since
they are in fact seeing me.
And commenting on it.
But it is not, in fact,
the way I want to be seen, nor
the way I want to be loved.
I ask them a million questions,
about their thoughts,
hopes,
dreams,
fears, and
aspirations.
But these questions
turn out to be
all in vain, for I
am not asked
in return.
Almost as if
my hopes,
dreams,
fears, and
aspirations
are a cheaper currency,
not worth trifling with.

What are the lengths you go to gain societal approval?

Women go to great lengths to fit classist beauty standards whose goal posts are moving constantly. As a matter of fact, Naomi Wolf, author of ‘The Beauty Myth’ writes about this. The more women gain emancipation and power in the United States, the more extreme the pressures become to fit unrealistic beauty aesthetics. It affects our ability to accept ourselves, and determines whether or not we’ll be accepted by society. Beauty standards are not neutral; we will never be free so long as they constrain us.

All this and more in my upcoming poetry book about love, longing, heartbreak, and the things that hold women back 💔
