THE TASTE OF THINGS

I finally watched the movie The Taste of Things (2023).

It's a love story, of course. It's a very French story because it's a story of love... for cooking.

The movie is full of beautiful things - marvelous vegetables, still llife like scenes with any kind of food, fine plates and wonderful names of old vines.

The story is placed in the gorgeous frame of the most beautiful times - "la belle époque", France at the late 1880th.

Inspired by the delicious movie scenes I decided to share here my love to the French gastronomy and the "art de table". Because it's known : the food tastes delicious if it's nicely served...

The famous parisian restaurant Le Train Bleu at the Gare de Lyon railway station is an emblem of the combination of gastronomy show, interesting recipes and professional waiters.

The opening of this restaurant goes back to the "belle époque".

A PERFUME BOTTLE TELLS A STORY

In my childhood, at my grandmother’s house, I was fascinated by her perfume bottles.

To me, they became elegant ladies and gentlemen, hosting balls and dinner parties in a world of imagination.

Today, as I guide visitors through the exhibition LOUIS VUITTON. ART DECO, I still see the perfume flacons the same way.

Look closely — don’t these flacons resemble characters?

From simple containers to art objects… perfume bottles carry history, imagination, and identity.

In the early 20th century, French glassmakers collaborated with perfumers to create true works of art.

Each bottle was designed to capture attention, reflect elegance, and embody the spirit of the fragrance inside.

Did you know?

🔎 The word flacon comes from Latin flasco — “a bottle for wine"

🔎 Collectors of perfume bottles are called lecythiophiles

🔎 Some flacons can be worth up to several thousand euros

THE APÉRITIF

Established in 1902 as the oldest Grand Cafe in Amsterdam, Café Americain has got its Art Deco design with high ceiling, arches, massive chandeliers and huge stained-glass windows in 1928.

It was a favourite meeting place for the city’s painters, writers and actors, as well as international musicians until 1960s.

The café was known for the reading table: inspired by the coffee houses of Vienna and Berlin, the owners placed a large table in the middle of the cafe with a selection of daily newspapers and magazines.

🧐 Lately I am very much in Art Deco times.

2025 was a year to celebrate a century of the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris.

It's also a reason to look back and discover how much the comfort of life, everyday habits, the dressing codes, living space and social life changed since then.

NICE DISCOVERY

Recently I had a lot of pleasure to visit a group exhibition of five emerging artists in a creative art space at Montmartre.

I was invited by .yun.wen

She presented me her works and works of her friends.

She explained that in a showcased series of three watercolours she was looking to represent visually three characters in Chinese language symbolising fire 火, 自 silk and 心hart. When they are combined together, it will mean 熄 - extinction.

How many color nuances can the human eye distinguish?

How many color nuances can be obtained from three basic colors - red, blue and yellow?

What if we add green to them?

Starting with 100 color nuances, Gerhard Richter developed color charts over decades and in 2007 completed a commission for Cologne Cathedral: a 7-meter stained glass window made of 196 panels. A total of 4900 color differences.
