💥SAVE THE DATE / Coming up:

Justine Kurland & Mariah Robertson
ANTIPHOTO

Vernissage: Thursday 3 September 6-9pm, in the presence of Justine Kurland

Exhibition thru 15 November 2026

This fall, Galerie Miranda presents a two-person exhibition by contemporary artists Justine Kurland (1969, American) and Mariah Robertson (1975, American), both known for challenging the photographic status quo.

In the forthcoming exhibition Antiphoto, Kurland and Robertson do not merely challenge the photographic canon, they lay it to siege, by cutting up, painting over, photocopying and repurposing its founding pillars. For this exhibition, and in playful defiance of art market rules, individual works from both artists’ installations will be proposed at the same low price: 199 Euros

💥 Summer reading in the latest edition of Aperture magazine entitled ‘Secrets’; an excellent in-depth article by featuring the series ‘Dirty Windows’ (1993-4) by Merry Alpern, where LaBarge considers the complex photographic grey zone between observing and intruding.

Representing this landmark series now for nearly ten years, Galerie Miranda also defends the work through the prism of sexual politics: at the time Alpern was heavily criticized and accused of voyeurism, yet, magnificently, there was no debate about what was actually in the pictures, and the ballet of bodies and transactions.

Today, the gallery believes that, beyond its cinematographic beauty and gritty power, this work is a unique landmark documentary record that exposes the sexual politics of New York’s financial elite of the 1990s.

The series is in key collections including;

💥 Just announced, solo show opening 1 September in Connecticut at the William Benton Museum of Art :

‘Ellen Carey: Colors in the dark. Polaroid 20x24 and photograms.’

From the excellent release:

“What emerges from Carey’s practice is not work that illustrates the world
back to us in any ordinary sense. It does something more slippery and
more demanding. It asks us to meet photography before it has fully agreed
to become image. In Carey’s hands, paper is crushed, manipulated, ex-
posed, and transformed; light is not merely captured but coaxed, tested,
and set loose. The result is a body of work often described as defying pho-
tographic convention. The phrase is accurate, but perhaps a little too tidy
for something so alive and searching.”

Until 20 December.

Ellen Carey is represented by JHB Gallery, New York and Galerie Miranda, please contact us if you would like more information about the artist and her work ✨
