We are deeply saddened by the news that Peter Schatborn has died yesterday, a few weeks after his ninetieth birthday. Peter had dedicated his long and productive career to the study of Dutch drawings, in particular those of Rembrandt and his school, which thanks to him are much better understood now than when he started as a young art historian in the late 1960s. He has been a close friend and generous colleague to our institution, as well as a donor. His 2010 catalogue ‘Rembrandt and his Circle. Drawings in the Frits Lugt Collection’ counts as the definitive publication on an important group within our collection, in particular on our more than twenty autograph sheets by the master. Among these is this drawing of a seated old man, which Frits Lugt acquired as a work by Salomon Koninck but which Peter recognised as a work from 1639 by Rembrandt himself.
