What role do European screen adaptations play in the evolving film industry? 🎬📚

Books are the leading source for European adaptations, accounting for 72% of all audiovisual fiction projects.

Although the share of adaptations has declined over time, they remain a valuable source of content for the film industry, as new data shows that:

➡️ The “book-to-screen” trend is largely powered by European intellectual property — nearly 90% of all adaptations are based on European works.
➡️ TV fiction adaptations represented 15% of all audiovisual fiction output between 2015 and 2024, remaining a stable part of the industry.
➡️ Between 2021 and 2024, adaptations represented 22% of original fiction productions by streaming platforms, compared to 18% for private broadcasters and 10% for public broadcasters.

Throwback to the third edition of — where new stories sparked remake opportunities!🤝

This year again, our program dedicated to European IPs gave buyers and producers an exclusive access to fresh titles and the opportunity to meet the rights holders behind them! 🎞

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Agustina Chiarino.

Agustina was a brilliant, highly respected, and genuinely kind professional. At the Marché du Film, we feel privileged to have known her and to have worked alongside her on the organization of the Ventana Sur market and the Proyecta program.

Agustina was a deeply respected and beloved figure within the Latin American film community. Through her work, her commitment to countless projects and her dedication to supporting filmmakers and future generations, she helped shape and strengthen our industry across borders.

At Ventana Sur, we had the privilege of working closely with her and experiencing firsthand her generosity, sharp vision, passion for talent development and unwavering belief in the power of collaboration. Her contribution to Uruguayan and Ibero-American cinema leaves a lasting legacy, and her absence will be profoundly felt.

Our thoughts are with her family, friends, colleagues, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with her.

She will be greatly missed and her presence will be especially felt at Ventana Sur this year.

What is shaping box office growth around the world? 📽️

Global box office revenue grew by 5% from 2024 to 2025, largely supported by rising cinema attendance in Asia’s key markets.

However, trends varied across other territories. In Europe, attendance decreased by 5%, driven mainly by a decline on the French market in 2025, as new data shows:

➡️ Only 12 out of the top 20 films from American studios sold over 10 million tickets (compared to 20 films before the pandemic)
➡️ European films accounted for 31% of admissions — still above pre-pandemic levels, but down 2 percentage points from 2024
➡️ While European film production continued to grow, volumes fell in some countries especially Türkiye (-64 films) and Switzerland (-26 films)
