Iran is a vast and layered country, home to people of many ethnicities who have lived together for millennia. Hidden and forgotten behind the headlines are their lives…

A while back, our dear Roxane Cassehgari Posada returned to Iran after 25 years to learn more about what it means to be from Iran. The result is “The Return”, a book shaped like a passport, that delves into the personal, the familial, and offers a glimpse at the Iranian life that is unfortunately forever bound to geopolitics.

Merci dear Roxane for sending us these photos! you can get a copy of this book through her, and as always, send us your photos and stories of Iran through DM & email. Have a good day family and see you at our next events! 💚🤍❤️

Our struggles have always been intertwined, today more than ever. Yet, many people around the world still do not know about Operation Ajax: a covert regime change operation that changed the course of history in Iran & the world.

On August 19th, 1953 - US & British intelligence led a coup d’état that overthrew Iran’s democratically elected prime minister Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh.

Dr. Mossadegh nationalized Iran’s oil industry, which had for years been controlled by the Anglo-Persian Oil Company [currently known as British Petroleum] & was only a source of little revenue for the country.

In response, agents & mercenaries were paid & trained by the CIA to overthrow Mossadegh’s government.

Amidst nationwide protests, Mohammad Reza Shah was re-installed by the USA as the Shah and ruler of Iran. The growing despair & discontent around the country culminated in an anti Western revolution that toppled the Shah in 1979.

The consequences of the coup & the darkness of the revolution stifled hopes for democracy in Iran and embittered Iran-US relations into the current day.

73 years later, Iran is once again at war, & ordinary Iranian people are once again paying the greatest price. Today, Iranians are caught between foreign military intervention, sanctions & economic hardship, and an Islamic Republic that has for decades brutally repressed its own people.

From Student movements of 1999 & the Green Movement in 2009 to Woman Life Freedom in 2022 to the January 2026 uprising & massacre, Iranians have continued to demand freedom at an enormous cost.

Remembering the history of foreign intervention in Iran does not mean excusing the Iranian government. And opposing the Iranian government does not mean supporting war or the destruction of Iran.

Iranians should not have to choose between foreign intervention & repression at home. We reject Iranian movements for freedom being hijacked by both the left & the right.

Today, reverberating through history, the Iranian people’s message in this photo still holds true:

“Let our people be free.”

Salam y hola family! It’s crazy to say it, but Disco Tehran is turning 8 ❤️When nobody let us in to play at their venues, we started this with a few friends in Arya Ghavamian’s tiny NYC apartment, looking for new friends and community. Now we’re celebrating years of dancing & watching films together in many countries around the world. And now everyone wants us to play at their venue!

Right on time for our birthday, New York Magazine’s new issue looks back at the dance culture we helped build in NYC and the beautiful community of artists & people that grew around it.

We’re very proud of how far we’ve come but most of all grateful for this global community we’ve built together and to everyone who has danced, played, & grown with us along the way. 8 years later, we’re still independent, still together & dancing. Anniversary party incoming! 💚🤍❤️🪩 Link in bio, get yours, invite family, and share the photo if you see us in print in NYC!

A very special thanks to team New York Magazine Jasmine Vojdani & deanmajd for creating the photos for this issue.

Sending love and condolences to the peaceful, warm, and loving people of Bandar Abbas, who have long suffered neglect under Iran’s leaders and now face the devastation of foreign powers bombing their city.

Neither the rulers of Iran, the United States, nor Isr43l truly care about the well being, dignity, or freedom of ordinary Iranians. Meanwhile, much of the world’s media and social media influencers follow their own agendas - often focusing on what generates attention & income rather than taking the time to understand the history, complexity, & stories of the people of Iran.

Iran is a country that is difficult to experience even for the most experienced observers. What we are witnessing is the reduction of critical thinking to campist behavior, of good vs evil, to the detriment of our entire social fabric and the erasure of the Iranian people’s livelihood.

Bandar Abbas is an ancient Iranian port, established around 600 BCE. It is a multi ethnic home to rich cultures and histories, where Arabs, Lurs, Baluch, Afro-Iranians, and others have lived together for generations. This is how Iran has survived for millennia, despite foreign invasions, and the repeated failure & ignorance of many of its own leaders.

This is an excerpt from Dingomaro, a documentary film about Afro-Iranian music and heritage as told by Hamid Saeed. Maestro Saeed was a beloved musician from Hormozgan, Iran, whose work helped preserve an extraordinary cultural tradition.

Take care, family. Hope to see you on the dance floor soon💚🤍❤️
