Summer ends the way it began — with a small object that tells a bigger story.

This is the Pepsi GMT bezel keychain. A 24-hour bezel in blue and red, mounted on a black leather strap and a stainless steel carabiner. The same anodized aluminum used on real bezels, the same tactile feel. Not a toy. Just a very small piece of horology you can carry even when your watch stays home.

The 7 essential complications, explained in one chart.

Not everyone needs a perpetual calendar on their wrist — but every watch lover should know what one is, and why it matters.

1. GMT — two time zones at a glance. Born 1954 for Pan Am pilots, now the most useful daily-wear complication.

2. Chronograph — a stopwatch built into the dial. The tool that timed racers, pilots, and astronauts.

3. Moonphase — an aperture showing the lunar cycle. Purely poetic, mechanically clever. Drifts only 1 day every 122 years.

4. Perpetual Calendar — a movement that knows how long each month is, and when leap years occur. Set correctly, it's right until 2100.

5. Tourbillon — a rotating cage holding the escapement, designed by Breguet in 1795 to offset gravity on pocket watches. Today it's more art than necessity.

6. Minute Repeater — a watch that chimes the hours, quarters, and minutes on demand. The rarest and most prestigious complication.

7. Flyback Chronograph — press the pusher once and the chronograph resets and restarts instantly. Born for fighter pilots, loved by everyone who's ever wanted a faster stopwatch.

The rectangle problem.

Most straps are made for round cases. The Reverso is a different language — a 1931 Art Deco rectangle with precise lugs, sharp edges, and no room for approximation.

A strap for a round case tolerates a small margin. A strap for a Reverso doesn't. The lug width must match to the tenth of a millimeter. The end has to sit flush against the case profile — no gap, no overhang. The taper has to echo the geometry of the case, not fight it.

This navy alligator strap was shaped for this exact reference. Hand-beveled edges, tonal stitch, folded ends pressed against the lugs. The kind of work that only shows when you put it side by side with a "universal" 16mm strap — and then it's obvious.

A Reverso deserves a strap made for a Reverso. Nothing else looks right.

Shell Cordovan. The leather few know, the one the best cobblers keep quiet about.

Four things that make it the rarest leather in horology:

1. It doesn't come from the skin — it comes from the shell, a dense fibrous membrane under the horse's rump. A material that doesn't exist in cow, calf, or goat.

2. Only 3 tanneries in the world still produce it at watch-grade level: Horween in Chicago, Shinki Hikaku in Himeji, Rocado in Tuscany. Six months minimum of vegetable tanning.

3. It doesn't patina — it glows. The fibers compact with wear and develop an optical depth leather lovers call "the cordovan shine."

4. One horse yields only 2 strap cuts. That's why a shell cordovan strap costs 3 to 5× a classic calfskin.

We keep a small rotation of cordovan straps at our boutiques — Japanese Shinki Hikaku Burgundy, Whisky, and Petrol blue. Ask Mark, he'll pull the drawer.

① Square scales. Uniform, rectangular, symmetrical — the visual signature of refined leather.

② Softness and lustre. Alligator hide takes a deeper glaze than any other skin, softens gracefully with wear, ages into character rather than wear.
