We visited the Grand Palais in Paris on our family holiday to France and saw this totally fantastic exhibition about the relationship between Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely and Pontus Hulten. Really excellent exhibition that revealed the importance of film and performance in their work that just isn’t accessible in photos. I’ve attached some video clips! Also revealing of the ways that relationships become defined by art careers and the entwinement between their lives. Fascinating! Such a joy with my kids too https://www.grandpalais.fr/en/program/niki-de-saint-phalle-jean-tinguely-pontus-hulten

This is the view from my summer holiday right now. This is my bookshelf in the office at Loughborough University where I write and this is my sofa at home covered in pets where I write. Kids are also floating around at dinner time but avoid my social media.

Looking forward to participating in this exhibition organised by a very dear old friend Lucy Williams from my Chelsea days as part of Leytonstone Arts Trail. Also excited to be showing with another dear old friend from Chelsea Jana Haldrich. I’ll be showing two drawings from my PhD research at Loughborough University. The drawings are being sold as a limited edition of 20 Giclee print on archival paper

Reflecting on this drawing I made in 2020 ‘Eviscerated’ pencil on paper. Capturing the feeling of physical loss in being away from your child for too long.

Just reflecting on one of my favourite works in the Women in Revolt exhibition by Margaret Harrison, Kay Hunt and Mary Kelly: ‘Women and Work: A document of the division of labour in industry 1973-1975’ It presents with such clarity the inequality in the division of labour between men and women as not only were womens wages less than men but as the presentation of the diary below shows their work is unending; as they carry out their second shift at home it brackets around their day shift at the factory. My mother worked at metal box in Portsmouth in the 60’s before she had my brother and I. Even though she earned more than the factory workers as a secretary she still depended on my father’s income and the support of his family. If you look at the division of their labour in time across a day I’m not sure things have changed much at all for the lives of working class mothers today.

I also made it to the Unravel exhibition at the Barbican yesterday. Here’s a few highlights before my phone ran out of batteries. It exceeded my expectations and you really don’t get a sense of the political power of these works until you visit the exhibition. The video documentary that accompanied some of the collaborative works are inspiring and motivating for creating feminist activism.

Absolutely loved Women in Revolt at Tate Britain today. So much rich history there and so many works I had only ever seen as photos in books. So glad I got to see the crumbs of Bobby Bakers Edible Family installation too. I did wonder about single mothers though - while they were present I wondered how their experiences might have been discussed/highlighted in relation to the political context. The Hackney Flashers nursery project is interesting to see in relation to current childcare policy here in the UK - it’s utopian ideals are unaware of the neoliberal exploitation that awaits as future generations of families become dependent on dual incomes to survive. While we owe this generation a huge debt of gratitude for their activism it left me feeling like we still have so much more to do. Alot to reflect on in connection to our current time.
