[Agenda]

At the Yale University Art Gallery, “August Sander’s People of the 20th Century” brings together more than 600 photographs from the German photographer’s lifelong project.

Rather than approaching portraiture as individual representation alone, Sander used photography to construct a broad social portrait of Germany.
Farmers, workers, artists, families and political figures appear within a carefully organized structure of groups and typologies, photographed between 1892 and 1954.

The project moves between classification and individuality: each image belongs to a larger social framework, while resisting reduction to a single “type”.
This tension would profoundly shape the history of documentary and portrait photography throughout the twentieth century.

Presented in its entirety, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to understand the scale and structure of Sander’s project.

À la Yale University Art Gallery “August Sander’s People of the 20th Century” réunit plus de 600 photographies issues du projet mené toute sa vie par le photographe allemand August Sander.

Plutôt que d’aborder le portrait comme une simple représentation individuelle, Sander utilise la photographie pour construire un vaste portrait social de l’Allemagne. Paysans, ouvriers, artistes, familles ou figures politiques apparaissent dans une organisation rigoureuse de groupes et de typologies, réalisée entre 1892 et 1954.

Le projet oscille entre classification et singularité : chaque image s’inscrit dans un ensemble social plus large, tout en échappant à toute réduction à un simple “type”.
Cette tension marquera durablement l’histoire de la photographie documentaire et du portrait au XXe siècle.

Présentée dans son intégralité, l’exposition permet de saisir l’ampleur et la structure de ce projet majeur.

At Paris Photo 2025, Éric Tabuchi presented ‘Kristen & Yass’ a deeply personal publication built from family archives, letters and reproduced images.

Centered around the lives of his Danish mother and Japanese father, the book reflects on memory, disappearance and the ways images can preserve fragments of a life long after language fails.

Rather than producing new photographs, Eric Tabuchi constructs the book entirely through reproduction (photographs of documents, typed texts, archival images) turning the photobook itself into a space for transmission, doubt and remembrance.

À Paris Photo 2025, Éric Tabuchi a présenté ‘Kristen & Yass’, une publication intime construite à partir d’archives familiales, de lettres et d’images reproduites.

Centré sur le parcours de sa mère danoise et de son père japonais, l’ouvrage interroge la mémoire, la disparition et la manière dont les images peuvent préserver des fragments de vie lorsque le langage devient insuffisant.

Plutôt que de produire de nouvelles photographies, Eric Tabuchi ssemble fragments d’archives, correspondances et reproductions photographiques dans une forme volontairement discontinue, faisant du livre photo un espace de transmission, de doute autant que de souvenir.

[Paris Photo Students Prize 2026]

⏳ Less than two weeks left to apply for the Paris Photo Students Prize 2026.

Organized by Paris Photo in partnership with and .en.gare (), the Paris Photo Students Prize has supported emerging photographers and art students enrolled in European schools since 2017, offering exceptional visibility to a new generation of artists.

🏆 The winning portfolios will be exhibited at Paris Photo in a dedicated space, as well as in one of Paris’ main train stations.

Vice-President of the French Competition Authority, Chairwoman of the Palais de Tokyo and President of the CEAAC in Strasbourg, Anne Wachsmann Guigon has built, together with her husband Emmanuel Guigon, a collection of modern and contemporary art in which photography holds a central place.

Shaped by photobooks, exhibitions and fairs, her collection spans eras and geographies from Atget and Walker Evans to Nan Goldin and Zanele Muholi, with a particular attention to the political and feminist dimensions of the image.

In this interview, she reflects on the artists, images and encounters that continue to shape her collection.

— Zanele Muholi

Born in 1972 in Umlazi, South Africa, Zanele Muholi is a visual activist whose work centers on Black q***r identity and the politics of representation. Through photography, Zanele Muholi confronts histories of marginalization while reclaiming visibility and self-definition.

In “Fika I, Penthouse 56,” part of the ongoing series Somnyama Ngonyama (“Hail the Dark Lioness” in isiZulu), Zanele Muholi turns the camera on themself.
Using their own body as both subject and site of inquiry, the artist stages a powerful meditation on race, gaze and the construction of Black identity. The heightened contrasts and sculptural composition intensify the image’s presence while asserting control over representation.

Zanele Muholi was named the 2026 Hasselblad Award laureate, one of the world’s most prestigious photography prizes.

[Agenda]

Lorna Simpson presents ‘Third Person’, a major solo exhibition at Pinault Collection, on view at Punta della Dogana.

Bringing together around fifty works, the exhibition offers one of the most comprehensive presentations of Simpson’s work in Europe in over a decade.

Known for her conceptual approach to photography, Simpson has, in recent years, expanded her practice through painting, continuing her exploration of memory, representation and the instability of narratives.

Through collage and image juxtaposition, Simpson constructs layered visual narratives that challenge how images are produced, read and remembered.

Currently on view in Venice, until November 22.

Réunissant une cinquantaine d’œuvres l’exposition constitue l’une des présentations les plus importantes du travail de l’artiste en Europe depuis plus de dix ans.

Connue pour son approche conceptuelle de la photographie, Lorna Simpson développe depuis plusieurs années une pratique picturale qui prolonge ses recherches autour de la mémoire, des mécanismes de représentation et de l’instabilité des récits.
