A police officer responded to an emergency call and noticed two little girls watching him nervously.

They were frightened of police officers and unsure what was happening.

So instead of simply finishing the call and leaving, Corporal C.B. Fleming sat down on the pavement beside them.

He picked up their dolls, began playing and joined the children as they drew with sidewalk chalk.

The call, which involved a reported gas leak at an apartment complex in Virginia, turned out to be a false alarm.

But the girls’ fear was real.

Their mother later said one of them would normally become upset around police, yet remained calm as Fleming played beside her.

He did not give a speech or tell them they had nothing to fear.

He got down to their level and showed them.

Sometimes making a community feel safer does not require a badge, a siren or an arrest.

Sometimes it begins with sitting on the sidewalk and playing dolls.

In August 2022, a Bugatti Chiron made headlines after it became the target of an attempted robbery in central London. While stopped in traffic near Hyde Park Corner, the driver, Kuwaiti collector Abdullah Al Basman, was approached by two thieves on scooters, one dressed as a food delivery rider. The pair smashed the passenger-side window with a hammer in an apparent attempt to steal his luxury watch, but the driver accelerated away before they could reach inside. The incident, which was caught on video, later emerged as part of a series of watch robberies carried out across Mayfair that afternoon.
