Thanks to Dior for this beautiful tribute to Marcel Mariën.
It refers to the photograph « Le tableau blanc » (The white board), 1953.
The first version of this photograph dates from 1949 and refers to the famous photograph « Le violon d'Ingres » by the surrealist Man Ray in 1924.
If the position of the woman is similar to Man Ray's photograph, the gills of the violin have disappeared in favour of a text painted in the flesh. This practice of combining words and the female body runs through Mariën's entire photographic work, whether the letters are painted directly on the body, or whether they are placed on the body itself, or whether he enhances postcards depicting female nudes with words. The female body is used as a "white board", the words bringing meaning.
