Thanks to Dior for this beautiful tribute to Marcel Mariën.

It refers to the photograph « Le tableau blanc » (The white board), 1953.

The first version of this photograph dates from 1949 and refers to the famous photograph « Le violon d'Ingres » by the surrealist Man Ray in 1924.

If the position of the woman is similar to Man Ray's photograph, the gills of the violin have disappeared in favour of a text painted in the flesh. This practice of combining words and the female body runs through Mariën's entire photographic work, whether the letters are painted directly on the body, or whether they are placed on the body itself, or whether he enhances postcards depicting female nudes with words. The female body is used as a "white board", the words bringing meaning.

With this collage, Marcel Mariën conjures up several references: to art, to psychology, to the context of colonization.
To art, he refers to Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968). The inventor of the "ready-made" had a considerable influence on 20th century art, as on Mariën, whose references to his work are frequent. Marcel Duchamp imagined his self-portrait in the form of a cut-out profile on a black background. He signed this series with the pun "Marcel Déchiravit" (Marcel tore up fast). Mariën quotes it while detaching himself from it, since he adds a sexual connotation to it.
The title, combined with the iconography of this profile, also suggests other levels of analysis. Mariën would refer here to the inventor of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), who declared in 1926 that the sexual life of adult women was still a "dark continent" for psychology.
Finally, the expression "dark continent" refers to Africa. Through the choice of gold and the sexual iconography, Mariën offers a critique of the exploitation of African resources by the West, which does not hesitate to "pump" African’s wealth for its own profit. In the Belgian context to which the surrealists are sensitive, the independence of the Congo declared eleven years earlier, will not have changed anything.

Le Traité des Fées
« L’heure des fées, c’est l’heure des poètes. »

Fernand Dumont est un écrivain belge surréaliste d’origine montoise. Juriste de formation, il découvre André Breton, rencontre Achille Chavée et rejoint le groupe surréaliste Rupture. Il fait partie des fondateurs du groupe surréaliste en Hainaut où l’amitié entre passionnés d’écriture prévaut sur les revendications esthétiques.

Pour Fernand Dumont, « seule l’écriture permet la réconciliation de l’individu avec le monde ». Membre du Comité de vigilance des intellectuels antifascistes, il est arrêté en 1942, date à laquelle est publié Le Traité des Fées, où merveilleux et observations pratiques se mêlent espièglement. (MM-O-101) Marcel Mariën, « Nouvelles impressions d'Afrique », 13.03.1972, object

This work is a good example of the principle of misappropriation or hijacking of the everyday object dear to the surrealists. While Magritte diverts objects and their uses to better reveal their poetry and mystery, Mariën observes a more iconoclastic attitude, aiming to question the myths and symbols attached to objects.
With this work, Mariën gives a second life to... a broom brush. Two strokes of paint and it is transformed into an African mask! The basic object is diverted from its initial, banal function to acquire a new status. Unlike Marcel Duchamp, who would have presented the broom brush as such, Mariën increases the means of the objects by adding something to them.
The title is a reference to Raymond Roussel's novel, « Impressions d'Afrique » (1909), whose theatrical adaptation in Paris in 1911 marked Francis Picabia, Guillaume Apollinaire and Marcel Duchamp. The latter even claimed that this book inspired the creation of his most famous work, « La Mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, même » (1915-1923).

🎉 On this day, April 29, 2020, Marcel Mariën would have been 100 years old.

To celebrate this event and honour this key figure of surrealism in Belgium, The Marcel Mariën Foundation is very happy to announce the online publication of the catalogue raisonné of his work on our website: www.fondation-marcel-marien.com

This is a first phase of publication, the online catalogue raisonné being considered as a work in progress to be completed and improved as research and discoveries are made.

In recent weeks, the digital transition has accelerated and is becoming the privileged channel connecting us to each other and also enabling us to access culture at a time when museums, concert halls and theatres remain sadly closed.

This evening, the Marcel Mariën Foundation had planned to bring you together at BOZAR for the opening of the exhibition « Marcel Mariën. Surrealism Without Painting », which we were preparing as part of the festivities around this centenary. The exceptional circumstances we are experiencing will have decided otherwise.

In spite of this difficult context, we do not let ourselves be discouraged and we continue with conviction our mission, that of studying, protecting and promoting surrealism in Belgium.

We hope that you will find a lot of pleasure in browsing the work of a man who would certainly have had a lot to say about the strange times we are going through.

💡En ces temps de confinement, faites venir le dehors, dedans!

En 1933, Magritte repense sa peinture et initie une nouvelle méthode visant à trouver la solution aux problèmes posés par des objets du quotidien.

Ce tableau, intitulé « La condition humaine », est la solution au problème de la fenêtre.

Magritte explique sa démarche : « Je plaçai devant une fenêtre, vue de l’intérieur d’une chambre, un tableau, représentant exactement la partie de paysage masquée par ce tableau. L’arbre représenté sur ce tableau cachait donc l’arbre situé derrière lui, hors de la chambre. Il se trouvait pour le spectateur à la fois à l’intérieur de la chambre, sur le tableau, et à la fois à l’extérieur, par la pensée, dans le paysage réel. C’est ainsi que nous voyons le monde. Nous le voyons à l’extérieur de nous-mêmes et cependant nous n’en avons qu’une représentation en nous. De la même manière, nous situons parfois dans le passé une chose qui se passe au présent. Le temps et l’espace perdent alors ce sens grossier dont l’expérience quotidienne est seule à tenir compte. »

Cette expérience quotidienne, Magritte entend l’enrichir en perturbant nos habitudes mentales, en nous forçant à VOIR le monde autrement.
