group show : a century of art brut - BOOTH 1.G7
What is a masterpiece when the one who made it never set out to make one? The works gathered here arise from no artistic ambition but from a far more urgent necessity: to set the world in order, to mend it at times, or — when it becomes decidedly uninhabitable — to invent another. From the universe Wölfli rebuilt within the walls of his cell to Zemánková's botany that no science could ever name, the exhibition brings together these "individual mythologies", as Szeemann called them: cosmogonies whose maker is at once architect and sole inhabitant.
Their elsewhere is neither geographic, nor historical, nor stylistic: it is intimate. These creators were perhaps never outside art; they simply stood in a place art had not yet learned to look.
