christian berst art brut

christian berst art brut the reference gallery for art brut.

Since 2005, the gallery christian berst art brut - internationally recognized as a reference in its field - has been putting its passion at the service of creators off the beaten track, whether they are “clas- sics” already consecrated by museums and collections or contemporary discoveries promised to the recognition of the art world. The gallery distinguishes itself as much by its exhibitions, it

s participation in international art fairs as by its publications - more than 80 bilingual catalogues to date - or its conferences, screenings and other cultural events that tend to bring an ever wider public into the intricacies of art brut.

Upcoming exhibition at The Bridge : ousseynou gassama - espèces d'espaces. Opening Saturday, September 5

The gallery presents its first monographic exhibition of Hassan (known as Ousseynou Gassama), featuring a selection of 25 drawings on wooden boards from the collection of Kathrin Golda-Pongratz and Thomas Golda, who discovered the artist in 2008.

On the sidewalks of Barcelona's port district, Hassan (Ousseynou Gassama) meticulously drew flat-roofed houses and geometric furniture on salvaged wine-crate boards. A former Senegalese blacksmith, he owned only a suitcase for his tools and a radio, and was fascinated by angles, convinced they determined a work's value. In place of a signature, he inlaid small copper plates stamped with the number 4. Discovered in 2008 by Kathrin Golda-Pongratz and Thomas Golda, he disappeared from the city in 2012 and was never found. In 2025, his first exhibition was held at the Casa Museu Mater; his work is now in prestigious collections, notably the Centre Pompidou.

Upcoming exhibition at The Bridge : ousseynou gassama - espèces d'espaces. Opening Saturday, September 5

On the pavements of Barcelona’s port wine warehouse district, Hassan draws on repurposed wine-crate boards, depicting flat-roofed houses or functional pieces of furniture seemingly floating against an untouched background. Yet his rigorous abstraction, figurative geometry, and selective realism remain imbued with mystery, as though these silent spaces were telling a story whose narrative eludes us.

Summer read 📖

Rediscover our catalogue dedicated to the work of Cuban artist Jorge Alberto Cadi.

In the streets of Havana, everyone knows Jorge Alberto Cadi as « El Buzo » — the diver — as he is constantly searching for materials among the city’s abandoned objects. Boltanskian in his memorial use of photography, Warholian in his taste for stitching images together, Cadi always seeks to reveal what these photographs are hiding.

First exhibited by the gallery in 2019, his work was presented at Paris Photo in 2022 and, that same year, featured in the second part of Photo Brut, which, following the Rencontres de la photographie d’Arles, was hosted at La Centrale and the Botanique in Brussels.

His work is part of the collections of the Musée national d’Art moderne — Centre Pompidou. In 2023, he was exhibited by Sophie Calle at the Musée Picasso.

Last Days: In Abstracto #4

The exhibition In Abstracto #4 is on view at the gallery until Saturday, July 25. We invite you to discover the works of Isabel Alemán Corrales, presented alongside those of other artists.

In Art Brut, abstraction never speaks with a single voice. At times, it reveals an invisible order; at others, it traces the rhythm of organic growth or distils the world into a sign.

As Jeanette Zwingenberger writes, “The mystery of these works lies in their autonomous logics. They constitute an autopoietic system: produced according to the conditions of their own intelligibility, the work creates a world whose laws emerge from its internal organisation rather than from an external reference.”

currently on view at the bridge : le miroir des songes curated by Margerite Pilven

Through the prism of an enigmatic drawing by Pierre Molinier, the exhibition invites a profound exploration of aesthetic and psychological reverie.
By bringing into dialogue works by contemporary artists with creations from Art Brut, the exhibition questions the mirror not as a mere superficial reflection, but as an emancipatory interface, a site of emergence, and an act of resistance against dominant representations.

With the artists: Lindsay Caldicott, Christine Lefebvre, Perrine Lievens, Olivier Leroi, Thomas Lanfranchi, Raphaël Lonné, Mark Lyon, Philippe Mayaux, Pierre Molinier, Simon Pasieka, Anna Solal, Elmar Trenkwalder, Chloé Vanderstraeten, Scottie Wilson, Henriette Zéphir, a Czech anonymous artist, Lafora anonymous.
