Remy from Ratatouille

"Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere." – Food critic Anton Ego, 2007

My favourite quote from my favourite movie. Popping out of the frame is that great artist, Remy, by breaking a bunch of cutlery and plates - all for a slice of cheese. Pushing through all boundaries to achieve his dream, he was an inspiration for little me.

I have been wanting to sketch this character for years, and only did I have the confidence to know that I can do justice to him. I hope you take your time and enjoy this piece as much as I did.

Bon appetit!

Remy from Ratatouille - Work in progress pt. 2

Well, I definitely spent wayyyy to long procrastinating on Remy. Now that the body is complete, I only have to do the background.

I think this is turning out to be my favorite artwork yet - the messy smudges on the pape being the best parr :)

Although, I would need to correct some of the values on his legs and tail area to make it a bit lighter. I think I went too heavy with the darks there.

Loki - Work in Progress 1

Here we are. The Norse God of Mischief - Loki, played by
In the MCU movies. I really enjoyed the character on screen that I wanted to transfer it to paper, and hopefully you folks like what you see. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of how I drew the eyes.

Well, I spent an absurd amount of time in NOT sketching this character. But hopefully, I'll be able to spend more time on drawing again :)

Time taken (so far) - 14 hours.

TOOTHLESS - The Night Fury.

Here's my rendition of this amazing character from How To Train Your Dragon using Caran d'Ache Luminance pencils and Ohuhu markers.

Behind this hard and cold of this dragon was the soft and warm heart of a good friend to Hiccup. I can draw parallels to this about my experience with the new pencils.

At first, I understood very little about how these pencils worked. They weren't soft like the Prismacolor nor were they hard like the Faber Castell Polychromos and it didn't make sense to me. But as I kept using them more, it started clicking - especially as I was rendering the skin.

I think this is going to be a great addition to my arsenal, and would probably be replacing my Prismacolors with these, as they hold a fine point very easily!

Also, I'm liking the idea of dark backgrounds more than plain ones, but they do take additional time. Let me know what you think of them :)

"Every breath you draw in my presence annoys me" - Cersei Lannister

Time: 26 hours (approximate)

Here is my rendition of Cersei Lannister, portrayed by Lena Headey (), from the show - Game of Thrones. The subtlety of this character to get her objectives done is one of her most interesting aspects. Personally, I chose this look as the short-haired look from the later seasons mirrors the lack of said subtlety.

I took some inspiration from artist Jono Dry () to create dark backgrounds to give a different appeal to the artwork. Although I did not use the same technique he uses and it took me so much time to achieve the finish I wanted, I am extremely pleased with the final outcome of the sketch :)

I relied heavily on the Staedtler Mars Lumograph BLACK pencils to get the rich dark values without casting a lot of shine. Additionally, I don't think I used the white pen to create highlights, as I found them to be too jarring from my previous portrait artworks. I have to thank my trusty Tombow Mono Zero eraser to get me the highlights I wanted.

The biggest challenge I had in this artwork was interpreting details from a poor-quality reference image. I took a screenshot from the show and obtained a low-res image after cropping. It is unfortunate that I could not render the face textures, but I am very happy with the overall values!

Lastly, no matter what I tried I could not get the index finger holding the wine goblet to look realistic. I decided to let the flaw stay in the picture so I could improve on it someday!

Congrats to the winners of Guess the Character! You guys played the 'Game' well :)

RORONOA ZORO - INK & GRAPHITE

"Only those who have suffered long can see the light within the shadows" - Zoro

Reference:

There are so many things that are incredible about this One Piece character; he fights with 3 swords, and hardly has a sense of direction. But what I found to be truly fascinating is that he joins a pirate crew despite being known as 'Pirate Hunter' just to become the greatest swordsman that ever lived.

I wanted to put to use the manga ink pens I had and I really loved this poster look, and thought I should draw it. But who knew that graphite would work really well with ink. It really gave me some great tones to develop the lights and shadows in a smooth manner!

If you liked this, do share and save the artwork so that more people can enjoy my work :)

THOR - The God of Thunder

Well, here is the final version of my rendition of Thor (portrayed by )! I went for a style that combines elements from both Infinity War and Ragnarok, using a reference that I created by myself.

Time taken: 63 hours

Materials Used: Faber Castell Polychromos, Prismacolor Premier, Ohuhu Alcohol Markers, Strathmore Toned Grey

I'm very happy with the final outcome of this artwork. Including Stormbreaker took a long time and wasn't easy to do, especially to match the lighting.

Of course, this took quite a bit longer than what I initially anticipated, but I am overwhelmingly glad that I didn't get discouraged by the duration :)

Hope you all like this one. Let me know your thoughts down in the comments, and do save and share the post :)

THOR - Work In Progress 2

32 hours later, we arrive at half an arm and partially completed armour of

The armor is coming along quite well. I've been able to get some rich blacks thanks to the base layer from the Ohuhu Markers and through multiple layers of Polychromos Black.

I have left out places to show where I use the markers for the base layer and some white sections to know where an area would be bright.

I will be making a big change from this reference from here on to bring in the Infinity War element in this piece. But I would most likely be finishing this by July and not this month.

THOR - Work In Progress 1

It's taken my a little above 20 hours to reach this point, and I'm hardly half way through the artwork! I'm going for a cross between Ragnarok and Infinity War. You'll see that soon enough :)

Regardless, I am enjoying the overall process with these Faber Castell Polychromos (the details especially). I'm using a technique that is similar to 's extremely detailed method. I just watered it down a little to make it easier to complete the artwork.

I am focusing more on the lighting and details and I think this is going to be my best work yet!
Except for the hair, as I messed it up and I now can't add any more layers. Sorry,

An almighty congrats to the winners of Guess the Character:tribbiani .ramann .raja .whateverart

"Woof woof, bow bow wow" - Pluto.

Time taken: 18 hours.

Materials: Strathmore Toned Grey, Staedtler Lumograph Black, Faber Castell Black, Prismacolor White, Ohuhu Cool Grey, White Gelly Roll pen, Mono Zero eraser, Xacto knife

Hey everyone! So, this is Pluto, 's furry kiddo. Do not let yourself be deceived by his name though. He should have been named Jupiter for his size :)

Always craving for food (mainly biriyani), Pluto loves to settle into the "Frog yoga" pose that you can see above! It's his signature relaxing pose.

I tried something different with regard to art. Decided to do a graphite based artwork with white highlights. I primarily used the black graphites with the white pencils. It involves a lot of careful planning and precision, so I wouldn't recommend this method to beginners.

Congrats to the winners of guess the art:

Experimental 6 - An attempt at using ink pens and grey markers.

Hey everyone! Recently, I got a set of Micron markers by Sakura, and I really wanted to give my shot at a Takehiko Inoue style manga art!

I used chapter 162 of his Vagabond manga for reference and added in a rainy scene with the white gel pen.

Disclaimer: I haven't read the manga, so I don't know who the character is. I found this panel to be cool and wanted to attempt drawing it :)

Time taken: 3.5 hours

Materials: Sakura Micron Ink pens, Sakura White Gelly Roll pen, Ohuhu Cool Grey 1
