Our final exhibition of the season closed this week in Paris. ‘What Touches the Scalp is Close to the Bone’ was curated with rare tenderness and intellectual rigour by Christina Shoucair.
This exhibition brought together ten artists from the SWANA region (Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, and Iran) to explore through the medium of hair themes of intimacy, transmission, sorority, rebellion, and the body as archive.
To show these works in Paris at a moment when the region is enduring so much was an unabashed act of love, and a celebration of togetherness.
To everyone who attended the exhibition, thank you. Your presence, your curiosity, and your support, meant a lot to us. We cherish all the conversations that emerged from the exhibition and the stories about your own relationship to hair.
To the artists — Maliha Abdi, Aidha Badr, Yasmina Hilal, Raya Kassisieh, Fatima Kaleem Khan, Mahsa Merci, Reem R., Samo Shalaby, Abeer Sultan, Amina Yahia — thank you for trusting us with your work and inviting us through your work to move closer to the bone.
And heartfelt thanks to the wonderful team who made it all possible, Christina, Zahra, and Sinda.
We close the season with full hearts. See you after the summer.
