Last week, Compagnie de L’Être was in residence at Le 109 in Nice. Starting with nothing more than our bodies, the space and an idea - to explore words without words - we took our first steps towards a new creation.

In August this year Cie de L’Être was at Nord Universitet in Levanger, Norway, working on an ongoing exploration into the language of visual theatre. Here are a few images (apologies for the quality of the photos). Once again I felt privileged and grateful to work with such a group of talented young actors who share a common physical and theatrical language and an enthusiasm for the work.

Also this year Simon T. Rann began yet another project in Norway, again with Maja and Barbro Be**en, and with actress Sofie Huijs, on a show about the Norwegian author, poet, artist and cartoonist Kjell Aukrust. In Norway Kjell’s vast array of talents have entertained and informed several generations Norwegians, and they continue to do so today. Kjell is perhaps best known outside of Norway for the 1975 animated stop-motion film Flåklypa Grand Prix (The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix), which was based on stories, characters and drawings created by him for his fictional village of Flåklypa. We have done two residencies in Otta so far this year and aim to premier the show in November. Stay tuned!

If you read my last post you will have realised that Simon T. Rann is back in Norway (for the 4th time this year, but more about that later). I’m here now working as writer/director on a site-specific immersive theatre experience about the ghosts and local folklore of Otta, simply called “Otta Ghost Tour”. I’m working with Maja Be**en and Silje Olava Bakken (performers and co-writers), Barbro Be**en (costumes and décor) and Martin Korsletten (composer). We’re working at the semi-abandoned Pillarguri quarry, where they’ve been mining slate for 150 years. It’s premiering on the 4th of October. Stay tuned, there’s certainly more to come. In the meantime, a few photos from the site to whet your appetites...

In 2019 Simon T. Rann (Cie de L'Être) began working as a writer/director with actress Maja Be**en and her sister, artist Barbro Be**en, creating a solo theatre show for children about the life and work of Astrid Lindgren. Inspired by the book "Astrid Lindgren" by Agnes-Margrethe Bjorvand, with stunning illustrations by Lisa Aisato, the show is titled “Jeg vil ikke blive stur, en barnSlig fortelling om Astrid Lindgren”. It has very little in the way of lighting or sound effects and so relies heavily on Maja’s talents as actor and Barbro’s skill as a puppet maker to create a poetic and fun piece of theatre that communicates through image and action rather than words and explanation. Incredibly the show is still touring in Norway, and I’m going to see it today in Dombås for the first time in more than five years!
