ROOTS WARRIOR SOUND remembers Lui Lepkie, also known as Louie Lepke, Lui Lepki or Ron Lepki, born August 12, 1957, in Kingston, Jamaica — a distinctive deejay of the early dancehall and rub-a-dub era whose raw delivery and streetwise style made him a respected figure among selectors and sound system warriors. His first recording, “Can’t Take Me Landlord,” was produced by Joe Gibbs, launching a career that would include the cult album Late Night Movie (1981), followed by Willie Red (1982) for Hit Bound, and memorable cuts such as “Lepkie Style,” “Walter Rodney,” “Georgie Porgie” and “Step Mother.” Lepkie was active on legendary sound systems including Gemini, King Sturgav and Volcano, and recorded alongside artists such as Johnny Ringo, Danny Mangaroo, Eek-A-Mouse, Cornell Campbell and others, becoming part of the vibrant transition from the DJ style of the 1970s into the raw rub-a-dub sound of the early 1980s. He also appeared in the landmark reggae documentary Land of Look Behind, filmed around the time of Bob Marley’s funeral. Tragically, after relocating to New York, Lui Lepkie was shot and killed in December 1987, aged only 30, cutting short the journey of a deejay whose recordings remain treasured by lovers of foundation dancehall. 🕊️ ROOTS WARRIOR SOUND salutes LUI LEPKIE — a true rub-a-dub warrior whose voice still rides the riddim. ROOTS WARRIOR SOUND remembers Donald Willis, better known as Doniki or Don Icky, born August 11, 1966, in Trench Town, Kingston, Jamaica — an incredibly gifted but often underrated roots singer, songwriter and sound system veteran whose unique voice and conscious lyrics earned him a special place among Jamaica’s roots revival artists. After leaving school at 16, Doniki entered the sound system world, performing with Romantic Sound and the legendary Killamanjaro, before recording his first song “She Give Me Icky” in 1982 — the track that inspired his name. Guided musically by Bunny Wailer and Johnny Osbourne, he developed a powerful roots style and later formed a celebrated partnership with Steady Ranks, recording classics such as “Trod On,” “Jump Nyahbinghi,” “Don’t Mix With The Devil” and “Never Dis A Rastaman.” Their album Come To Give Praises became an important roots release, while Doniki’s solo career produced the excellent Radikal Expressions (2006), with songs including “Gully Bank,” “Life Of The People,” “Hard Working People,” “Jah Is For Real,” “Burning Fire,” “Jah Live Forever” and “Ready & Come.” He also collaborated with artists such as Anthony B, including the powerful “Break Free,” and wrote songs for other reggae artists. Tragically, Doniki passed away on June 5, 2016, aged only 49, after suffering from longstanding health problems. His death was a huge loss for the roots community, but his music continues to circulate through sound systems, vinyl collections and the hearts of those who discovered his deeply spiritual and socially conscious work. 🕊️ ROOTS WARRIOR SOUND salutes DONIKI — a soldier of Jah, a voice of the people and one of Jamaica’s most underrated roots treasures. ROOTS WARRIOR SOUND celebrates Joseph Réginald Topize, better known as Kaya, born August 10, 1960, in Roche-Bois, Port Louis, Mauritius — a revolutionary singer, songwriter, poet and cultural icon who created seggae, the powerful fusion of Mauritian séga and Jamaican reggae. Growing up in a working-class family, Kaya discovered music at an early age and was deeply inspired by Bob Marley, taking his name from Marley’s 1978 album Kaya and later forming the group Racinetatane with musicians from his community. Singing mainly in Mauritian Creole, he gave a voice to the struggles, identity, dignity and aspirations of Mauritius’ Creole community, transforming seggae into a powerful language of resistance, unity and social consciousness. His essential catalogue includes Seggae Nu La Mizik (1989), Roots of Seggae (1990), La Paix Universelle (1991), Tansyon Mové Zintansyon (1992), Seggae Man (1993), Racine Pé Brilé (1994), Kaya Chante Marley (1996), Zistwar Revoltan (1996) and Mo La Misik (1997), establishing him as the undisputed pioneer of a musical style that would spread far beyond Mauritius. His final concert took place on February 16, 1999, during a campaign for the decriminalisation of cannabis; after being arrested days later, Kaya was found dead in police custody on February 21, 1999, officially attributed to head injuries, although the circumstances surrounding his death remain deeply contested and continue to fuel accusations of police brutality. His death triggered three days of riots across Mauritius, making Kaya a powerful symbol of resistance and social injustice. More than a musician, he became a voice for an entire generation — and his seggae continues to carry his message across the Indian Ocean and around the world. 🦁 ROOTS WARRIOR SOUND salutes KAYA — THE FATHER OF SEGGAE! ROOTS WARRIOR SOUND celebrates Rapha Pico, born August 9, 1989, in Amsterdam, a talented singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer carrying the rich musical heritage of Suriname and Martinique. Son of Djeynah Delbety, legendary Martinican-born singer of the Dutch reggae group Revelation Time, Rapha grew up surrounded by music, learning piano, flute and percussion before embracing reggae and Rastafari as his spiritual path. He developed his career with groups including Rebeljam and Roots Controlahz, then with his own Roots Rockers, winning the Benelux Reggae Contest in 2014. His journey took him to Jamaica, where he recorded at the legendary Tuff Gong Studios, while his work as a solo artist and producer through Pico Productions brought forward conscious roots releases such as Roots, Get Ready, Continue The Glory and The Glory Of Dub with The Noble Chanters, alongside songs like “Take A Look,” “Solid Ground,” “Rastafari,” “Change Must Come,” “Marching On” and “Wicked Be Gone.” His music has also found a home in the French roots scene through releases produced by the French label Chouette Records, further connecting his Amsterdam-based roots vibration with the European sound system movement. Working with and sharing stages with artists such as Julian Marley, Protoje, Romain Virgo, Norris Man and Vivian Jones, Rapha Pico represents a beautiful bridge between Jamaica, the Netherlands, Suriname, Martinique and the European roots scene, carrying the message of love, consciousness, unity and righteousness to a new generation. 🦁 ROOTS WARRIOR SOUND salutes RAPHA PICO! ROOTS WARRIOR SOUND celebrates Delroy “Bitty” McLean, born August 8, 1972, in Birmingham, England — one of the most distinctive British reggae and lovers rock singers of his generation, whose smooth voice and deep connection to Jamaican music have earned him worldwide respect.

🎤 FROM BIRMINGHAM TO JAMAICA

Bitty began his career as a sound engineer and producer, working with the legendary UB40 in Birmingham before stepping behind the microphone himself. His breakthrough came with the beautiful “It Keeps Rainin’ (Tears from My Eyes)”, which became a major UK hit and introduced his soulful voice to a much wider audience.

His career took a major turn when he began working with Jamaican legends Sly & Robbie and the Taxi Gang. This collaboration produced some of his finest work, including “Dedicated to the One I Love,” “Walk Away from Love,” “Loving You,” and the celebrated album On Bond Street with The Taxi Gang.

🔥 Bitty has also worked with and recorded alongside legendary musicians and artists including Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Gregory Isaacs, Maxi Priest, Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor, Luciano, Marcia Griffiths, and The Wailers, constantly moving between lovers rock, roots reggae, rocksteady and soulful Jamaican music.

His later albums — including Movin’ On, On Bond Street and Forward — confirmed his reputation as a vocalist deeply connected to Jamaica’s musical heritage while remaining proudly rooted in the British reggae scene.

ROOTS WARRIOR SOUND celebrates Alric Lansfield Malcolm, better known as Gold, Goldie or Goldie Locks, born August 8, 1950, in Jamaica — a gifted singer and songwriter whose soulful voice became inseparable from the legendary duo Don Carlos & Gold.

His partnership with Don Carlos, former member of Black Uhuru, produced a unique blend of heavyweight roots, cultural reggae and lovers rock, with Don Carlos’ distinctive voice beautifully complemented by Gold’s smooth and emotional harmonies.

Their essential album Them Never Know Natty Dread Have Him Credential (1982), produced by Niney “The Observer” Holness, recorded at Channel One with the Roots Radics and mixed by Scientist, remains a deep roots classic.

Among the highlights:
“Natty Dread Have Him Credential”, “Ginalship”, “Ride On Christine”, “Jamaican Woman”, “Oh Girl”, “Rain All Night”, “Untrue Girl”…

The duo continued their musical journey with releases including Ghetto Living and Raving Tonight, while Gold also worked with producers such as Roy Cousins and Joe Hoo Kim.

Though sometimes overshadowed by his famous partner, Gold’s contribution is undeniable. His warm, soulful delivery brought another dimension to the early-80s roots sound, connecting conscious reggae, cultural themes and lovers rock.

Today ROOTS WARRIOR SOUND celebrates Dudley “Manzie” Swaby, born August 7, 1953, in Alston, Clarendon, Jamaica — legendary record producer, label founder, songwriter and one of the important architects of Jamaica’s golden roots reggae and early dancehall era.

Manzie’s passion for music developed in Kingston, where he was exposed from a young age to the Studio One environment and the artists surrounding Coxsone Dodd. He eventually left his government job to dedicate himself entirely to music production.

In 1974, together with Leroy “Bunny” Hollett, he founded Ja-Man Records, later establishing his own Manzie and Heavy Weight labels. From the mid-1970s into the early dancehall years, he created a remarkable catalogue of heavyweight productions.

🎤 Among the artists he produced or worked with Junior Byles, Rupert Reid, The Itals, Leroy Smart, Bim Sherman, Rod Taylor, U Brown, Brigadier Jerry, General Echo, Clint Eastwood, Trinity, I-Roy, Doctor Alimantado, Errol Scorcher, Hortense Ellis and many others.

Manzie also played a major role in the development of dub, producing the legendary Ja-Man All Stars sessions recorded at Channel One, featuring an extraordinary studio line-up including Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Ansel Collins, Gladstone Anderson, Tommy McCook, Bobby Ellis, Headley Bennett, Sticky Thompson, Bingy Bunny and other foundation musicians.
