Aujourd’hui, je vous montre la sculpture à la main d’un socle qui fait partie d’un ensemble de 3 sculptures, mais surtout je vous partage mes réflexions sur le fait qu’une pièce soit réussie ou non. Plus je sculptais cette pièce, moins elle me plaisait. Mais lorsque je l’ai assemblée avec les 2 autres morceaux, finalement cela fonctionnait plutôt bien ensemble. Cela m’a permis de voir ce qu’il fallait modifier sur cette sculpture pour que l’ensemble soit plus harmonieux, et cela m’a fait réfléchir à la notion d’échec.

Today, I’m showing you the hand-carved base of a sculpture that’s part of a set of three, but more importantly, I’m sharing my thoughts on what makes a piece successful or not. The more I carved this piece, the less I liked it. But when I assembled it with the other two pieces, it actually worked quite well together. This helped me see what needed to be changed on this sculpture to make the whole set more harmonious, and it made me reflect on the concept of failure.

Aujourd’hui, je vous montre la première partie de la réalisation d’un ruban de Moëbius en érable. La vidéo montre les étapes de sculpture à la main, avec des gouges de sculpteur. L’œuvre réalisée est un mariage entre un nœud celte, la triquetra, et un ruban de Moëbius. Je vous laisse profiter d’un peu d’ASMR, en écoutant le bruit du copeau qui se forme.

Today, I’ll show you the first part of the process of making a Möbius strip out of maple wood. The video shows the steps involved in hand-carving the piece using woodcarving gouges. The finished work is a combination of a Celtic knot, the triquetra, and a Möbius strip. I’ll let you enjoy a bit of ASMR as you listen to the sound of the wood shavings forming.

Aujourd’hui, je me fabrique un outil pour la sculpture sur bois. Il s’agit d’un racloir, que je fabrique à partir d’une vielle lame de scie à ruban. Le racloir est un outil qui coupe de façon spécifique, grâce à un morfil que l’on vient créer en écrasant le métal, ce qui crée un morfil, qui devient la partie tranchante de l’outil qui permet d’enlever du bois sur ma sculpture. J’ai fabriqué de racloir avec une forme circulaire, ce qui me permet également de vérifier très facilement si ma sculpture est à la forme que je souhaite. Ce racloir est donc 2 en 1 : il m’aide à sculpter en enlevant du bois, et il m’aide à vérifier si ma sculpture a bien la forme désirée

Today, I’m making a tool for woodcarving. It’s a scraper, which I’m crafting from an old band saw blade. A scraper is a tool that cuts in a specific way, thanks to a cutting edge created by flattening the metal, which becomes the sharp part of the tool that allows me to remove wood from my sculpture. I made a circular scraper, which also allows me to easily check if my sculpture has the shape I want. This scraper is therefore a 2-in-1 tool: it helps me carve by removing wood, and it helps me verify that my sculpture has the desired shape.

Aujourd’hui je vous montre la réalisation en sculpture d’un bateau en érable. Cette maquette est de petite taille car la coque mesure 11cm de long. Il s’agit d’un cotre sardinier (un cotre est un type de bateau avec 2 voiles à l’avant – les focs). Mon client m’avait fourni les plans précis de la coque, le challenge était de reproduire le bateau le plus fidèlement possible. J’ai donc commencé par faite une maquette en contreplaqué à partir des plans, puis à dégrossir la coque avec un copieur. Il restait ensuite pas mal de travail pour lisser toute la coque en utilisant des gouges. Il fallait également creuser le pont pour faire apparaitre le bastingage. Mon client a déjà commencé à fabriquer les voiles

Today I’m showing you a carved model of a boat made from maple. This model is small, as the hull is only 11 cm long. It’s a sardine cutter (a cutter is a type of boat with two sails at the bow—the jibs). My client provided me with precise plans for the hull, so the challenge was to reproduce the boat as faithfully as possible. So I started by making a plywood model based on the plans, then roughing out the hull with a copier. After that, there was still quite a bit of work to smooth out the entire hull using carving gouges. I also had to hollow out the deck to reveal the railing. My client has already started making the sails

Je vous explique ces quelques règles simples pour ne pas se blesser en sculpture sur bois, règles qui ne sont pas toujours facile à appliquer en permanence au quotidien.

Je vous présente ma dernière sculpture, qui représente un macareux moine en taille réelle (environ 25 cm). Cet oiseau vit en Atlantique Nord jusqu’à l’Antarctique. Réalisé dans du cerisier avec un veinage d’une grande richesse, j’ai choisi de ne sculpter que peu de détails, afin de laisser le veinage du bois s’exprimer.

I’d like to introduce my latest sculpture, a life-size puffin (about 25 cm). This bird is found from the North Atlantic all the way to Antarctica. Carved from cherry wood with a rich grain pattern, I chose to include only a few details so that the wood’s grain could speak for itself.

Aujourd’hui, une sculpture plutôt simple. C’est un bas-relief en tilleul qui représente deux fleurs d’arum entrecroisées. Laissez vous porter par le son du copeau qui se forme et par les images de ce travail réalisé à la main.

Today, a rather simple sculpture. It’s a bass-relief carved from linden wood (basswood) depicting two intertwined arum flowers. Let yourself be carried away by the sound of the shavings as they form and by the images of this handcrafted work.

Voici ma dernière sculpture. Réalisée en prunier et mesurant une quinzaine de centimètres de haut, elle représente une femme qui s’éveille. Ni complètement endormie ni entièrement réveillée, elle s’étire pour se préparer à une belle journée. J’ai choisi ici de lisser le visage et les pieds, et de conserver les marques de gouges sur le reste du corps, pour représenter également cette hésitation entre deux mondes. Profitez comme elle de la douceur de ce moment.

Here is my latest sculpture. Made from plum wood and measuring about 15 centimeters tall, it depicts a woman waking up. Neither completely asleep nor fully awake, she stretches to prepare herself for a beautiful day. I chose to smooth the face and feet, and to keep the gouge marks on the rest of the body, to represent this hesitation between two worlds. Enjoy the sweetness of this moment, just as she does.
