Like holding the fragility of the sky in our hands after 2 years of research... a very emotional moment for me and my co-adventurers! ✨

This “Sky bubble” is the entanglement of our scientific and artistic knowledge. It consists only of black and white matter in a transparent sapphire (no blue pigment, just Rayleigh effect!).
This is an artistic recreation of what happens in the atmosphere: when the white light coming from the sun enters our atmosphere, penetrates through our atmosphere, the blue fraction of it scatters across several atmospheric layers, thus giving its radiant blue color to the sky.
This hand-crafted poetical object intends to bring us face to face, in an intimate way, with the immateriality of the atmosphere. In this space, we have striven to bridge together microcosm (brush-made micro-structure composed of nanoparticles) and macrocosm (light travelling through the cosmos).

It seemed essential to us that it should be minimalistic, almost radical if we look at it from a pictorial point of view as it is a painting that litterally fits in a hand. When monumental works are rightfully popular, I have enjoyed attempting to suggest a vision of the infinite in a tiny structure.

Visit to Gallerie degli Uffizi with my partner in crime Anne Pillonnet to track clues on atmospheric blue effects in an unfinished work by Leonard da Vinci “l’Adoration des mages”…we have found a correspondence !

If you are curious to know more about the connection between my blue, Leonardo Da Vinci, and the atmosphere, you will definitely find serious material in this book. More generally, it is composed of a series of unpublished articles on the uses of blues and greens, not only in art history but also in nature.
It has been directed by Michel Menu, who was until recently the Director of C2RMF (Center of Research and Restoration for French Museums) and Anne-Solenn Le Hô. Many thanks to Michel and Anne-Solenn, of course, but most of all to Anne Pillonnet (ILM) and Romain Thomas (HAR) for their kindness and our teamwork.✨💫

Very good news coming in ! After many months of preparation, Michel Menu’s new book « Les Bleus et les Verts » in collaboration with Anne-Solenn Le Hô is about to be released ! It includes an article on our research on physical blue with Anne Pillonnet and an Art Historian Romain Thomas. Michel is a top French scientist and is the Director of C2RMF (French Museum Research and Restoration Center). I wanted to share with you a few pictures I have taken in their labs. Did you know they have a functioning particle accelerator right underneath the Louvre museum to conduct their research ? 🔬💫👨🏼‍🔬

Le bleu aussi fait sa rentrée ... en Suisse !

Reproduire le bleu de lʹatmosphère sur papier, en peinture et sans aucun pigment chimique, c'est le pari dʹune artiste plasticienne et dʹune physicienne françaises. En mélangeant du noir et du blanc elles arrivent à reproduire un phénomène physique de diffusion qui donne sa couleur au ciel....

Je suis heureuse de voir que ce projet Art - Science suscite l’intérêt des pages Sciences et Prospectives du Journal économique "Les Echos" ! Merci au journaliste pour cette visibilité, compte tenu de l'actualité.

Une collaboration entre une artiste plasticienne et une chercheuse a permis de retrouver et de formaliser la méthode permettant de produire une couleur bleue très pure.

Chers amis artistes, si le sujet vous intéresse, les 1 et 2 Avril, je donnerai avec Anne Pillonnet une conférence sur "La lumière dans la matière : le bleu sans pigment" à l'Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de La Cambre à Bruxelles, dans le cadre d'une journée d'étude sur " La peinture dans la lumière ". Un panel composé d’artistes, conservateurs, restaurateurs d’œuvres d’art, commissaires d’exposition, historiens de l’art, scientifiques et designers présenteront leurs travaux les plus récents.
