This summer, turn your free time into useful time for yourself ☀️💼
Not by putting pressure on yourself.
Not by trying to rebuild your whole career in two weeks.
Not by forcing yourself to be “productive” every single day.
But by using summer as a small professional laboratory.
If you are an expat partner, summer can feel like a waiting room: fewer answers, fewer events, fewer opportunities.
But it can also become the perfect moment to experiment quietly.
Here are a few unusual ways to use this time for yourself:
➡️ Create your “anti-CV”
Instead of listing titles and dates, write down what your CV does not show: moments of courage, invisible work, cultural adaptation, problems solved, decisions made under pressure.
Sometimes your real value is hidden between the lines.
➡️ Spend one day observing a job, not applying for it
Choose a role you are curious about and look at it like a journalist: what does this person do all day? What skills are needed? What problems do they solve? Would this life actually fit you?
Not every attractive job is a good daily reality.
➡️ Write a “no list”
Not your goals.
Your professional boundaries.
No to unpaid emotional labor.
No to jobs that shrink your skills.
No to roles where you have to constantly prove you belong.
No to saying yes just because you are afraid nothing else will come.
Clarity also comes from knowing what you refuse.
➡️ Interview your future self
Imagine yourself in December saying: “I’m glad I started this summer.”
What did you start?
What small decision helped?
What did you stop waiting for?
This can reveal the next step you already know, but keep postponing.
➡️ Build a “proof folder”
Collect screenshots, messages, feedback, projects, achievements, photos, certificates, kind words, results.
On difficult days, this folder becomes evidence that your skills did not disappear because you changed country.
➡️ Try a 7-day professional curiosity challenge
Each day, explore one small thing: a company, a person, a role, a sector, a tool, a podcast, a local event.
No pressure to decide.
Just collect clues.
➡️ Ask yourself: “What would I do if I did not need to explain my career gap?”
This question can be powerful.
Because sometimes, the fear of explaining our path keeps us from imagining the next one.
Summer does not have to be a career pause.
It can be a quiet reset.
A space to observe.
A space to test.
A space to reconnect with your professional voice.
You do not need to come back in September with a perfect plan.
You can come back with better questions, clearer boundaries, stronger proof, and a little more confidence.
At Absolutely Talented, we believe expat partners deserve more than “just adapt”.
They deserve space to think, explore, rebuild and choose what comes next. 🦓❤️
This summer, use a little free time for yourself.
Not to do more.
But to move differently.
