‘With its exposed concrete armature, the Halle aux Poissons currently stands as a relic of a disappearing world, and in a state of suspension,’ writes Manon Mollard, of Encore Heureux’s reinvention of the Halle aux Poissons in Le Havre, France.
After Le Havre was bombed during the Second World War, a new fish market was designed by Charles Fabre and Jean Le Soudier. Completed in 1952, it adopted the shape of a pentagon at the insistence of Auguste Perret, who was in charge of the city's reconstruction.
Closed to the public since the 1960s,in 2019, Paris-based practice Encore Heureux won a competition to transform the vacant building into a permanent home for social gatherings and cultural activities, drawing from the notion of ‘third space’. After successful seasonal openings, the team is keen to ensure this jewel of Le Havre's postwar heritage remains publicly accessible, explains Mollard.
