A climatic characterization of the site was carried out to obtain bioclimatic strategies for the housing design. Prioritizing passive strategies, the double-skin façade differs for each house depending on its exposure to the sun, the wind or public space.

Just as plant species are shifting northward due to climate change, solar and passive architectural devices against heat are also moving north. Inspired by the mashrabiyyas, the gallery extends the living space
outdoors, sheltered from the sun and prying eyes. On the other hand, the thermal role of the attic is enhanced during summer thanks to hatches that allow warm air to escape.

thickness of existing stone for thermal inertia, creates deep and intimate
intermediate spaces. These inhabited façades accommodate workspaces and shared

Nowadays, the forest, and the vallat de cauvet are two
distinctives ecosystems, separated by “the cite salonique”. By making the ground permeable, the cite salonique could become an ecotone, meaning a region of transition between two biological communities, where water can pe*****te the soil, where fauna and flora could thrive, where comfort comes from nature, and where people could enjoy the public space inbetween.

1. A new medium-density social housing project is created alongside a new public space that leads users to the upper central park and creates a common
ground, where arid vegetation, inclusive play areas, and a shared community garden activate the neighbourhood.
2. Pedestrian lanes are de-sealed, parking is rationalised, and garden separations in concrete blocks are replaced by vegetation, enhancing overall permeability.
3. By making the ground permeable, a continuum is created between public, semi-public, and private spaces. A neighbourhood gateway is created to reveal
new shared programmes for residents and passers-by, radiating into the Cité Salonique

Gardanne is a town that has developed through the exploitation of its soil, a process that has profoundly transformed and shaped its landscape. Topography has guided the location of housing, preserving natural areas from urbanisation. Yesterday’s industrial activities (mining) were situated between forests and residential areas; today, the town is organised into zones; tomorrow, these industrial areas could become buffer zones through de-sealing, accommodating mixed programmes that open up and support diverse ways of living.

The Bouches-du-Rhône region is strongly shaped by its climate. The Mistral plays a prominent role, while conditions are becoming increasingly hot and dry, leading to more frequent wildfires; at the same time, soil dehydration increases the risk of flooding. By mobilising its diverse resources—from drainage basin with its rice agriculture delta to the former mining network—the project seeks to reconnect the territory’s metabolism.
