Harlem is the original "Mecca" for Lindy Hop and Jazz... past, present, and future! Today I firmly believe that you cannot possibly begin to understand Lindy Hop without understanding, studying, and experiencing the story of Uptown NYC in Harlem and the Bronx 🙌🏾
Dancers like Julia Loving and Samuel Coleman and others are doing a wonderful work to rebuild the dance institutions who have been destroyed due to racism white supremacy, the oppression and destruction of thriving Black communities from within, gentrification, and cultural appropriation!
Despite all these challenges Harlem Swing, Lindy Hop, and Jazz culture is alive and kicking, never stopped existing (despite what the narrative of the global Lindy Hop scene would like you to believe), and is galvanised, stronger than ever, thanks to the work of Ms Lana, Ms Mickey, Ms Laura, Sam, Julia, Clyde, Ron, Paulette, Barbara, Dexter... and many more amazing people who care about community, history, and legacy 🙏🏾❤️
My final picture of me visiting Ms Norma Miller at Woodlawn cemetery brings my story full circle. Because I know that this journey would not have started if it wasn't for Ms Norma asking me: "Why do you do this? Why do you care so much about my culture?" Thank you for pushing me to think and not "just dance" and encouraging me to learn more. I am a better version of me today thanks to you 🙏🏾❤️
Thank you Carl and Nicole for receiving me in your home and the nice chats 🥰 it was good to get to meet again!
