In spite of its horror makeup, the script David shared with me for this project was deep and contemplative, with broad themes touching on grief, identity, and the relationship between an adult child and their parent. Much of the film is about seeing and being seen, and the reverence with which ordinary people deserve to be illuminated. David and I settled into a very static look for the film. The few dolly moves were simple and motivated, the zooms we tried to make slow enough as to barely be noticeable. We even built a camera rig that would present absolutely no parallax shift when panning or tilting. While subtle, the effect is uncanny, like allowing one’s eyes to search without turning one’s head. The result is a slow and reverential sense of observation.
