In spite of its horror makeup, the script David shared with me for this project was deep and contemplative, with broad themes touching on grief, identity, and the relationship between an adult child and their parent. Much of the film is about seeing and being seen, and the reverence with which ordinary people deserve to be illuminated. David and I settled into a very static look for the film. The few dolly moves were simple and motivated, the zooms we tried to make slow enough as to barely be noticeable. We even built a camera rig that would present absolutely no parallax shift when panning or tilting. While subtle, the effect is uncanny, like allowing one’s eyes to search without turning one’s head. The result is a slow and reverential sense of observation.

A lot of thought went into the development of the look for this piece. We looked to the 17th century Dutch masters for reference material, seeking to learn from their use of natural light and carefully arranged tableaux to elevate domestic scenes to something greater.

Morning Vigil makes its New York premiere this February 19th at Regal Union Square as part of the Winter Film Festival!

The project has racked up 15 official selections internationally and a number of honors, including Best Cinematography at the French Duck Film Festival and Best Visual Craft at the Visionova Film Festival.

I am so proud of what director David Maire and I were able to realize with this wildly talented crew. The result feels anachronistic and foggy, like a forgotten painting fading away in a tired old attic.

We are going to Cannes!

I had the pleasure of shooting Little Orange Flags - a short film written, produced, and directed by and produced by alums and . The project will make its international premiere at The American Pavilion Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at Cannes.

Little Orange Flags marks my second collaboration with the team; our first project together, Master Maggie, won the same competition in 2020 though all of the screenings were cancelled due to the pandemic. I’m so excited to be back in the competition with an exciting project to share!

I think the film we made together is absolutely beautiful, and I look forward to sharing it at Cannes. Hope to see you there!

premiering April 7th

Huge congratulations to and the team!

Special shout-out to the .mov for brilliantly pulling off the lighting for one of my favorite shots of the film with the help of and . Wide dinner table scenes tend to come out homogenous but for this scene we wanted notably different qualities of light on each character’s face to emphasize our protagonist’s psychological state at this point in the story. Mixing naturalism with expressive lighting is a really fun challenge and I’m very proud of how we pulled it off here.

I’m so excited to share that is making her directorial debut with Little Orange Flags at in April!!!!

I had the pleasure of being the cinematographer on this project and I feel so grateful that Julianna entrusted me with this story. So much thought went into the details within this film, from our unique optical approach down to the hand crafted wardrobe pieces — we built a textured world where the story felt like it was coming to life each day on the monitor. The shoot was brief but this crew felt so close by the end of it. I’m grateful to everyone I got to collaborate with on this one.

I keep having amazing set experiences every time I work with . This was the second narrative piece I’ve collaborated with them on and I look forward to what is to come.
