»Souvenirs of the Biocene«

Quartz sand and calcite are versatile high-tech materials – the building blocks of the world’s beaches. For millions of years, they have been recycled by intelligent life forms – and admired by humans as pearls, shells or corals.
Nature shows us the way: 3D-printing is not a human invention. Corals, termites and bees know how to ‘print’ with lime, and how to mix mortar or wax. They work without pesticides, without gene-editing tools or toxic ‘forever materials’; they are masters of survival and witnesses to the eternal cycle of growth and decay.
The Souvenirs of the Biocene refer to multi-national corporations whose practices are by no means sustainable or pioneering.

- Relics of the soul -

Mother of pearl is born of the body of the shell, an iridescent scar, a mineralized response to injury. There is a doubleness to it: fragility and strength, concealment and disclosure. Its double nature – organic and mineral – embodies hybridity: a memory of time, a trace of pain, a transformation of matter into a jewel.
The pearl becomes an extension of the body – a relic of life illuminated with its own light.

In artistic practice, a relic is not merely a remnant, but a carrier of meaning, speaking to what is lost while asserting a new kind of presence.
In that sense, jewelry can be seen as a relic of the body or soul – rooted in physical and spiritual experience, but embracing a cultural role of testimony, monument, or memory fe**sh.

Like random shouting and screaming souvenirs rubbing shoulders with each other in a seaside tourist shop, these three badges are connected and disconnected by their common theme of the seaside.

By the shoreline I find crab shells. Although the crabs’ patterns in the water blend into the surroundings, sometimes the camouflage fails. Hungry birds catch the crabs and swallow everything except the shells that remain.

Jewelry is not always associated with camouflage, but it can certainly function as such. It can harmonize with a wearer’s identity, be a social code, and a symbol that protects and reinforces a person’s strengths and weaknesses.

In times of crisis, I am reminded of the balance between protection and fragility, where the protection of camouflage is not always enough. In difficult situations, we need creativity, so I practice doing what at first seems impossible, such as braiding and weaving crab shells.

My mermaid is not meant to be a specific myth or a single story. She is closer to an accumulation — of myths, of symbols, of histories layered on top of each other. She carries traces of ancient goddesses, popular culture, personal memory, and longing.

For me, she represents the possibility of transformation — but also its tension. Change is never simple. Hybridity is never comfortable. To dream of the impossible is beautiful, but it also means accepting uncertainty.

In that sense, the mermaid becomes a mirror. She reflects our desire to cross boundaries — between worlds, identities, states of being — and our fear of what we might lose in the process.

By placing her within Extranalities by the Sea, I wanted to bring together myth and personal history, the collective imagination and my own relationship to the sea. To suggest that these ancient figures are not distant or decorative, but still active — still speaking to us.

The mermaid survives because she embodies a question we keep asking: Can we become something else? And if we can — what are we willing to leave behind?
