En—-Tashi Dorji** is a Bhutanese-American guitarist and improviser based in Asheville, North Carolina. Born and raised in Bhutan, he moved to the United States in 2000, where his musical language developed through encounters with punk and metal, free jazz, experimental music, and the radical possibilities of improvisation.
Working across acoustic and electric guitar, Dorji approaches the instrument as a space for texture, resonance, silence, and spontaneous discovery. His playing draws on alternative tunings, unconventional techniques, atonal experimentation, and an intuitive relationship with sound rather than conventional melody or harmony. His early recordings, beginning with *Solo Improvisations* in 2009, established a distinctive voice within contemporary experimental and free-improvised music.
Over the years, Dorji has released a substantial body of solo work and collaborated with artists including Mette Rasmussen, Susie Ibarra, Tyler Damon, Shane Parish, Aaron Turner, Michael Zerang, Joe McPhee, Bill Orcutt, Elliott Sharp, and Sally Gates. His recordings have appeared on labels including Drag City, Hermit Hut, Bathetic Records, Feeding Tube Records, Astral Spirits, VDSQ, and MIE Music.
Dorji’s music occupies a space between composition and improvisation, often moving from delicate, sustained tones and near-silence toward unexpected bursts of density and intensity. His work has earned an international reputation for its highly individual approach to the guitar and its commitment to the open-ended possibilities of live performance.
