Live in the DMV area? Celebrate Asian, Pacific Islander, Desi American Heritage Month at University of Maryland and watch Specially Processed American Me on April 11 6-7:30pm at Hoff Theater at STAMP (0126 Stamp Student Union, College Park, MD 20742). The film screening is free and open to the public. Sponsored by .

MICA's APIDA involvement is partnering with SEE for a special showing of Specially Processed American Me by Jaime Sunwoo. The film is a "surreal autobiographical performance that uses SPAM, the canned meat, as a portal into [Sunwoo's] Asian American upbringing and her family's experiences of the Korean War. It investigates SPAM's legacy in the military, its significance in the Asia-Pacific, and its influence on Asian cuisine through music, shadowplay, and cooking. Oscillating wildly between absurd humor and sober tragedy, Specially Processed American Me is a thought-provoking exploration of one of America's most misunderstood foods." A facilitated discussion on the film will follow.

In Specially Processed American Me, three generations of women cope with the reverberating consequences of the Korean war. During our talkback, Jennifer Le and Masato Goda from WomanKind , Jeehae Fischer from Korean American Family Service Center , and artist Jaime Sunwoo will explore themes from the film– immigration, assimilation, intergenerational trauma– to reflect on how war impacts Asian American communities today.

Swipe to learn more about WomanKind and Korean American Family Service Center, both non profit organizations working to empower survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and child abuse.

Jaime Sunwoo: Thanks Professor Dylan Yeats for inviting me to guest lecture and talk about Specially Processed American Me at NYU today! It was great to chat with students about Spam and AAPI history. Scroll for a photo of a Spam Halloween costume that Dylan made for his brother. It's a vintage can! Very rare to meet another person who's painted a giant can of SPAM.

Annoucement from Jaime Sunwoo: "I contributed to 'The Kitchen Studio' published by Phaidon Press and found the book in France at La Collection Lambert en Avignon! The book is a collection of recipes and thoughts on food by artists, including folks I've admired for a while like Kehinde Wiley and Kiki Smith. I wrote about my play Specially Processed American Me, reflected on Spam, and shared a Spam fried rice family recipe. Lovely to know it's shared around the world! You can find it in your local bookstore. It just took me a while to announce it because I was consumed with working on my play when the book was released.

Shout out to Zach Bell for the scrumptious food photo."
