We didn’t want to leave you hanging with just a breakdown without explaining the complexities of this project. Sit back, relax and enjoy as we go through our workflow.
First of all, Novanight comprised two different creations: the Triple action commercial (the one we’ll talk about today) and the Phyto one (which we’ll show on a later date). That means we had to deliver two projects at the same date (before you ask: we succeeded 😎).
The first steps were to conceptualise the film, so we looked for references we could use for the environment first (image 1), in which we placed a mockup of the character to have a refined idea of how the scene would / should look (image 2). We also created the flying sheep by following roughly the same creative process. The goal here was to give them a unique, cloudy yet realistic and “alive” look, full of personality (images 3 and 4).
We then storyboarded the advertising (image 5) and prevized the shots (example given in images 6 and 7). Previz is used when we need to pre visualise (hence the name) a scene by recreating a 3d version of it with the director’s vision. It enables us to know exactly how the advertising is supposed to be organised and in turn makes us gain a lot of time. Image 9 represents two snapshots of the final result to compare.
In this case though, previs was also useful during shooting as we used motion control (hello .visual 👋) to film the scenes of the advertising. In that case this technique allows them to pre-determine the movements of the robot to gain a considerable amount of time on shoot day, with no unpleasant surprise. Couple that with creative ways to solve problems like making a person float in the air (Image 8) and you’ve got a filming session that goes smooth as ever.
All in all, we were able to deliver two advertising projects in under 5 weeks with no quality loss, all thanks to the talented people working with us and our efficient workflow.
