THINKING MARATHON: "Thinking love”

The Thinking Marathon starts tomorrow, for a duration of 3 days.

We will offer a reflection around the concept of love, through various philosophical exercises and skills.

The program:

-We will publish an exercise every morning at 9am. You have the day to do it and post your answer in comments until midnight Paris time. The exercise usually takes about 20 minutes.

-Our team of philosophers offers individual feedback on each answer as the day progresses.

-The next day, you can apply the feedback you received to the next exercise.

BONUS: Those who participate in the 3-day marathon will be offered a 30-minute philosophical consultation by one of the philosophers on our team!
(Via Zoom, day and time of your choice).

The exercises will be posted on this group, and you will just have to write your answers in the comments section: https://www.facebook.com/groups/379902883162956

See you tomorrow at 9am!

Don't hesitate to invite your friends and acquaintances to join this marathon.

Looking forward to reading you and making you think.

Do you sometimes ask yourself why you get angry with others? Or how to control your emotions? Or what is keeping you from leaving a peaceful existence?

We often ask ourselves such existential questions. But we tend to run away from them, to escape the mental strength that thinking invites us to do.

In Philosophical Practice, we embrace those questions, and we question them, we think about them, and we learn to enjoy the thinking process.

Interested in observing how to do so? Watch a live consultation!

Join us, Friday 15 October, on Facebook, to see a philosopher give a short consultation, at 16h paris time.

Send us PM for more information!

Wondering what we do? The ITD year long program is for those who would like to work on cultivation of the self via critical thinking. Throughout the year we work on who we are and how we think. We produce and explore arguments, read and interpret texts, train in asking questions, identify and formulate problems, learning to understand others and ourselves better.

We work on developing skills that help us:
-understand texts
-conduct one on one consultations
-facilitate group workshops

Participants work with tutors to develop thinking in:
-routine homework with feedback
-weekly workshops in small groups
-weekend seminars each month

Join ITD’s one year program to cultivate your thinking! Starting October 18th.

📣Yesterday, Renee had a consultation with Oscar. She asked him : “Why am I so addicted to a simple game lately?” The dialogue went through some structural moments we usually encounter in our practice.

First, the philosopher generally has some work to do on the client’s attitude. Oscar realized after 15 minutes that the discussion was being difficult because of Renee’s nervousness. Therefore he took this opportunity to explore her psyche. We discovered that Renee was afraid of revealing herself because of her feeling of stupidity. The work on the client’s attitude – her psychological disposition and availability to the dialogue – is never disconnected from the initial question. It will generally highlight some unconscious aspects of the problem. Here one could understand that Renee’s problem with this “simple game” was to face recurrently her feeling of stupidity.

Second, as for the philosophical content, the philosopher will generally work on presuppositions in the client’s problem. In yesterday’s dialogue, one of the main presuppositions which was focused upon was the experienced split between “I” and “myself” in Renee’s daily life. Her experience of her addiction consists indeed in the painful gap : “I cannot control myself”. Renee’s “I” is her conscious self, devoted to work, aiming at aiming money despite a boring activity. On the opposite, Renee’s “myself” is her unconscious desires which push her to play and deviate her from productive activities. One could then recognize Renee’s desire to hide.

Lastly, he philosopher and the client may explore some solutions to the problem. Yesterday it remained as an open question : “could you give something else to “myself”, rather than a simple video game, to give her some joy and excitement?” Renee was puzzled as she realized that she wouldn’t. Therefore she understood her addiction came from a lack of amusement and diversion from a boring work.

It is vital for a human being to understand himself and to be understood.

Therefore there is a great demand in a person who can understand your anxieties, pain and problems. There are so many approaches, which claim to help a human being to understand himself. But so few people around who can really give a sense of understanding.

We train our philosophy practitioners to mirror people and so to let them understand themselves better. We teach our consultants techniques that can make a person see himself and know himself a little bit more clear.

This Friday we will demonstrate a philosophy consultation in broadcast. You can be a client and philosopher will discuss your issue with you. The goal of this broadcast is to show you some efficient techniques that will help you:
- to lower down anxiety,
- to make an order in your thinking,
- to clarify your difficulties,
- to see different decisions of your problem.

Friday 8th of October 4pm Paris time. To join the broadcast: you just need to subscribe on our Instagram account and then click on Instagram pop-up when we start the live! Any questions, send a private message!

In training the skills of thinking, the philosopher and the subject work on the paradigm of thinking embodied, usually unconsciously, by the consultant himself. During the process emotional resistances often emerge which usually represent obstacles to the very development of dialogue and thinking itself--so these resistances are often thematized and analyzed.

The most frequent emotional resistances concern the awareness of characteristics that emerge from one's way of thinking: characteristics that one does not want to see or accept because they are considered too negative and ugly. It is clear how these characteristics clash with the illusory and distorted image that the person has created precisely to escape confrontation with reality. It is quite common indeed to observe how human beings, when they find themselves dealing with a reality that they perceive as unacceptable, tend to deny it, preferring to replace "what it is" with "what they would like it to be". It is called "wishing thinking", guided by emotions, fears and desires and tending to continuously deform reality. This explains why the person considers himself:
"workaholic" instead of "greedy",
"generous" instead of "selfish",
"lazy" instead of "impotent",
"rebellious" rather than "terrified".

Considering this, we clearly deduce different conflicts present in the subject, such as the ones existing:
🔗between what one is and what one would like to be,
🔗between what one thinks and what one feels,
🔗between one's actions and one's intentions,
🔗between the prescriptive dimension and the descriptive one.

These conflicts tend to generate anxiety, frustration and cognitive dissonance, states the subject often tries to overcome through manipulation, deformation, lying, repression, denial and creating rigged masks and sparkling illusions that have the aim of blinding not only others, but first of all themselves.

📣Why should anyone enlist in a philosophical counseling program? Let us look at three reasons.

🔹One is that we can benefit from it from a professional perspective. Many testify that our work on reasoning and various philosophical skills help them deal with their occupation, both with colleagues and the work itself, in a more efficient way than before. They find it easier to sift out the non-essential, to differentiate between what is important and what is urgent, to focus on what others are saying and to better understand the reason behind their speech.

🔹Another reason is that some go on to work as philosophical counselors. Full time or part time, they make a profession out of this. They take on clients, they hold workshops, they do consultations, they perform evaluations. Some train the next generation of philosophical counselors. Passing on the torch, so to speak.

🔹Finally let us not forget the psychological aspect. The training in rational thinking that we get can help clear the mind and sharpen the thought. We make presuppositions about other people to understand them better. We learn how to work on ourselves, to question ourselves in a structured manner. We gain tools to deal with the confusion in our minds. We put our own thoughts to the test instead of just saying what comes to mind. This work, which is mainly cognitive, can have psychological benefits in that it helps us not get stuck in our emotions, and instead of remaining in our subjectivity start seeing ourselves as an object available for improvement.
