AMERICA'S PATRIOTIC SONG
In 1984 the Republican Party coopted the refrain from Lee Greenwood's hit single "God Bless the U.S.A.". At the time America was on the cusp of winning an ideological competition against a militant form of collective socialism we knew as Communism.
"If tomorrow all the things were gone
I worked for all my life
And I had to start again
With just my children and my wife
I'd thank my lucky stars
To be livin' here today
'Cause the flag still stands for freedom
And they can't take that away
"And I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I'd gladly stand up
Next to you and defend her still today
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God bless the USA
"From the lakes of Minnesota
To the hills of Tennessee
Across the plains of Texas
From sea to shining sea
From Detroit down to Houston
And New York to L.A.
Well, there's pride in every American heart
And it's time we stand and say
"That I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I'd gladly stand up
Next to you and defend her still today
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land (love this land)
God bless the USA
"And I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I'd gladly stand up
Next to you and defend her still today
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land (love this land)
God bless the USA"

Fast forward forty years. It is 2024 and America is on the cusp of a landmark general election that will determine the future of Democracy as we know it. This year however, America has a new standard, an alternative standard based on the example of the French national Olympic effort.
The following "gift" article is the equivalent of an "infomercial", paid advertising produced editorially without oversight from the New York Times editorial board. That said, that the NYTimes would publish such an advertorial is in fact an endorsement of its content.
The central message for me is that France reinvented the modern Olympics as a showcase for society. The planners, mindful of their fiduciary obligations and working from a perspective of sustainability and inclusiveness as defined by national policy and in keeping with the ideals of COP 21 (the Paris Agreement) organized an event of global magnitude as a beacon to lovers of democratic freedoms around the world.
