Tell me a history about... the City Hall of Évreux. 🏛️
It is this imposing monument of limestone and brick, 65 meters long, standing in the heart of Evreux that we call the City Hall. Since its inauguration in 1895, the place has known many periods and powers before becoming what it is today :
Long before its construction, the original location was that of a Castellum, a fortification from antiquity during the Gallo-Roman period. Although the various buildings that remained on the site were demolished several times, the site has always retained the presence of a castle over time. 🏰
Before talking about the building today, let's look back at its history:
In 1108, Helvise, wife of the County of Evreux, ordered the destruction of the Castellum, then an immediate reconstruction of another castle on the spot. After multiple razings and rebuildings between 1194 and 1462 , Eleanor, Duchess of Bouillon, had the medieval castle demolished in 1652 in favor of a two-story building, which was again demolished in 1780, due to the presence of major cracks in the foundations. ⛏️
Finally, in 1793, the castle was acquired by the Marquis of Dauvet, then by the Municipality in 1836. 🛒🗝️
40 years later, in 1877, a competition was organized by the Mayor, following the testimony 📜 and will of his former deputy, Olivier Delhomme : to rebuilt a new City Hall. In total, twenty-five projects were submitted, and only one was chosen: that of the Parisian architect Thierry-Ladrange. In 1891, the 1st foundation stone ceremony was organized, followed by 5 years of work, for the inauguration of the City Hall in 1895. 🎆🎇
Concerning the current building, designed in a neo-classical style, it faces the monumental fountain of the city. ⛲ It covers more than 900m² and has decorations in honor of the city on its facade. Surrounding the main staircase, a memorial honour roll paying tribute to the fallen Ebroïcians was supposed to be erected in 1920. Although with great difficulty, it was finally erected on July 24, 1921 due to problems with its representation and the costs involved. As for the highlight places of the building, there is the wedding hall, decorated by the Ebroïcian painter Charles Denet 🎨🖌️, representing all the symbols linked to marriage and its values, and the city council room, where eight blazons, each one recounting the history of Évreux, adorn the room.
Although it is recent, the building has received great distinctions, among which we can count the ceremony of awarding the Legion of Honor to the city in 1943, and the city hall can boast of having received the former French President Millerand in 1923, as well as General De Gaulle in 1944 and 1960 ! 🇫🇷
