Want to improve your drawing and painting? Here’s one minute of me showing a shift that brings major benefits for both process and outcome ✍🏽🎨

Honestly this is something I ignored for years, but now it’s the very first thing I teach my drawing and painting students. There’s a place for wrist work (small + precise details); however it’s soooo valuable to train your entire arm for drawing and painting.

Benefits include:
πŸ˜“ Reduces fatigue and prevents injury - so important when you draw or paint hours at a time

〰️ Improves line quality - this is how you get long fluid lines and quality circles

πŸ–ΌοΈ Allows you to keep the whole picture in view. This is key when working big

Intentional art education does more than teach drawing and painting skills. It trains the brain to think clearly, deeply, and creatively. 🎨

We learn to notice lines and shapes and deeply observe light and colour. πŸŒˆβ›…οΈ

We ask what’s important and where should I focus first? These skills benefit students in science, maths, reading and broader life. ✨

We also gain new language and tools for expressing emotions. And we gain comfort in sharing our observations and experiences with one another. πŸ‘ŒπŸ½

I absolutely loved guiding and witnessing these George Rodrigue inspired blue (and golden and orange) dogs come to life. πŸ₯ΉπŸŽ¨πŸ•πŸ©΅πŸ’›πŸ§‘✨

If you’ve ever tried painting, then you know there’s a learning curve and it takes a lot of practice, patience, focus, and a strong frustration tolerance πŸ˜…πŸŽ¨

I’m so proud of this group of young people for trusting the process and going all in today πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½ For some, it was their first time painting πŸ˜πŸ‘ŒπŸ½

We explored hue, value, atmospheric perspective as well as brush techniques πŸ–ŒοΈ

Understanding these foundations not only improves painting and fine motor skills, but also deepens our observation of art and the world around us ✨

Why I recommend keeping a sketchbook ✍🏽

Or if you’re me, several sketchbooks! A sketchbook is just a journal for your art. You don’t have to show it to anyone and it can be a safe space to make β€˜bad art.’ πŸ“š

It is not about producing masterpieces. It’s about showing up for yourself and allowing yourself to channel both progress and peace through a regular drawing practice. πŸ§˜πŸ½β€β™€οΈ

A sketchbook is a good place to practice warm up exercises (shapes, contour drawings) or daily explorations and challenges. ✨

Practicing is essential to building your creative muscles like observation and your hand/eye connection. πŸ‘‹πŸ½πŸ‘οΈ

I recommend carrying your sketchbook wherever possible. Inspiration is everywhere and carrying a sketchbook gives you an awesome alternative to scrolling on your device. πŸ‘ŒπŸ½
