Ihtiriekko Knitting inspired by Finnish mythology and nature đŸŒČđŸŒČ Hi, I am Finnish knitter who loves forests, small horses, curly dogs, good books and black tea.

I have studied folklore studies and anthropology in Turku University, Finnish nature, mythology and folklore are endless source of my knitting inspirations and ideas. I live in a small, yellow house with my husband and a dog. When Covid-19 stopped the world in march 2020 and I needed to stay home when everything was cancelled I decided to knit through whole Kalevala. Kalevala is collection of old, mythic poems and folklore stories of Finland. There are more than 50 poems in the Kalevala so there are plenty of stories to knit. I am novelist so telling stories is important to me and when I knit sweaters or socks I always want to include stories to my knitting projects. When I first started my project I didn’t plan to write patterns or sell them for others to knit. After I published first photo of Maailman synty sweater (“Birth if the World, first poem of Kalevala)on my IG account there were so many questions about the pattern that I decided to try. If you like, you can follow my IG account: . I also try to answer all the comments and messages I get on IG and Ravelry but sometimes it takes a day or few. http://www.jennakostet.com

One of my personal favorites from Knitted Kalevala 3 is the KÀÀrmeen synty (Birth of the Snake) sweater. I think I went through three different versions of the pattern before I finally got it just the way I wanted!

Over the years, I’ve designed lots of intricate, folklore-inspired colorwork patterns, but lately I’ve been drawn to something a little more graphic and bold.

By the way, you could also embroider green eyes onto the snake if you wanted to add just a little pop of color to the sweater! 🐍💚

Yarn: Tukuwool DK

Yksi omia suosikkejani Neulottu Kalevala 3 kirjasta on KÀÀrmeen synty villapaita. Tein ehkÀ kolme eri versiota kuviosta ennen kuin sain mitÀ halusin.

Olen tehnyt vuosien aikana paljon pikkutarkkoja, folklore-henkisiÀ kirjoneuleita, m***a nyt houkuttavat tÀllaiset vÀhÀn graafisemmat jutut.

KÀÀrmeelle voisi muuten kirjoa vielÀ vihreÀt silmÀt, jos haluaisi jotakin pientÀ vÀriÀ neuleeseen!

The Myrsky sweater features a classic raglan construction, simple textured stitches, and a beautiful colorwork pattern. I wanted to create a timeless sweater with some lovely, stylish details that make it a little extra special.

Myrsky is also a great choice for knitters who don’t have much experience with colorwork yet!

A big thank you to from ILO | knitting shop for helping me choose the colors! ❀

Myrsky -villapaidassa on klassinen raglan-malli, yksinkertaista pintaneuletta ja kirjoneulekuvio.

TÀmÀ villapaita syntyi halusta suunnitella iÀtön neule, jossa on kuitenkin kivoja, tyylikkÀitÀ yksityiskohtia. Myrsky sopii myös sellaiselle neulojalle, jolla ei ole ÀlyttömÀsti kokemusta kirjoneuleista.

Kiitos ILO | knitting shop puodin joka auttoi valitsemaan vÀrit!

Now that all the designs from Knitted Kalevala III have been revealed and are up on Ravelry, I can finally start sharing a little more about the design process behind this final book and its knitting patterns!

One of my personal favorites is the Aurinko ja kuu (Sun and Moon) cardigan, which is worked flat and features easy colorwork throughout. The design was inspired by a poem from the Kalevala in which Louhi, the Mistress of Pohjola, steals the sun and the moon from the sky.

I’m already planning to knit another one for myself — this time really oversized, in something wonderfully soft, fluffy, and slightly fuzzy!

What do you think of the Aurinko ja kuu cardigan? Will it be making its way onto your needles?

At the beginning of summer, we had the loveliest photoshoot day at TyynelÀ Farm, photographing the designs for the final Knitted Kalevala book.

It feels wonderful to return to the atmosphere of these photos now, as autumn is tearing the leaves from the trees. At the same time, it feels a little bittersweet: this project has been such a big part of my life over the past few years, and now it has finally come to an end.

Pre-orders for the book open this week, so stay tuned if you’d like to be among the first to have a copy on your bookshelf!

And keep an eye on social media as well, because the test knitters’ versions are starting to make their way into the world too.

A little holiday was exactly what I needed!
We took our camper van to Norway and spent our days driving through fjords wrapped in rain and mist, climbing up to the mountain plateaus and winding back down into the valleys. Watching the ever-changing landscapes was the perfect way to let my mind rest after a busy spring.

I couldn’t quite keep my hands idle, though. This time I brought along my Kaaos Sweater, a project made from all sorts of leftover yarns that I gathered from the bottom of my yarn basket. It’s becoming a wonderfully colorful way to use up treasured scraps.

Now it’s time for a big task: proofreading my upcoming knitting book. I can’t wait to show you photos of the designs! I truly think this is going to be the most beautiful Knitted Kalevala book yet. At the same time, there’s a touch of bittersweetness, as this book also marks the end of an era.

How has your summer started? What are you knitting at the moment? đŸ§¶âœš

Pieni loma tuli ihan tarpeeseen! KÀvimme reissupakulla Norjassa, ajelimme sateen ja sumun kastelemia vuonoja ylös alas, ylÀngölle ja taas takaisin alas laaksoon. Mieli sai levÀtÀ kevÀÀn töistÀ maisemia katsellessa.

En kuitenkaan malttanut pitÀÀ kÀsiÀ joutilaana vaan puikoilla oli tÀllÀ kertaa mukana Kaaos -villapaita, johon upotan kaikenlaisia jÀmÀlankoja, joita lankakorin pohjalta sain haalittua mukaan.

Seuraavaksi edessÀ onkin iso työ, nimittÀin neulekirjan oikoluku. En malta odottaa, ettÀ pÀÀsen nÀyttÀmÀÀn teille kuvia kirjan malleista. Mun mielestÀ tÀstÀ kirjasta on tulossa nimittÀin kaikkein kaunein Neulottu kalevala -kirjoista! Toki tÀhÀn kirjaan liittyy myös paljon haikeutta erÀÀn aikakauden pÀÀtöksestÀ.

Miten teidÀn kesÀnne on alkanut? Millaisia neuleita on puikoilla?

MeidÀn juhannus on vÀhÀn erilainen tÀnÀ vuonna.

M***a nÀin jÀÀtikön!

Lately, I’ve been both writing a new novel manuscript and designing entirely new kinds of knits. I’ve realized that I design in much the same way I write.

I don’t begin with a fully formed idea, but with a vague feeling — and only later do I understand what I was creating.

Maybe that’s why this phase feels so familiar now — a little unfinished, but right.

With these photos we can dream about summer to come! Photos 4–6

Olen viime aikoina sekÀ kirjoittanut uutta romaanikÀsikirjoitusta ettÀ suunnitellut ihan uusia ja uudenlaisia neulemalleja. Olen huomannut, ettÀ suunnittelen neuleita vÀhÀn samalla tavalla kuin kirjoitan.

En aloita valmiista ideasta, vaan jostain epÀmÀÀrÀisestÀ tunteesta. Ja vasta myöhemmin ymmÀrrÀn, mitÀ olin tekemÀssÀ.

EhkĂ€ siksi tĂ€mĂ€ vaihe tuntuu nyt tutulta – vĂ€hĂ€n keskenerĂ€iseltĂ€, m***a oikealta.

NĂ€itten kuvien vĂ€lityksellĂ€ voi jo fiilistellĂ€ tulevaa kesÀÀ! Kuvat 4–6 kuvaaja Suvi Elo.

Spring has arrived — the trees are already turning green, even though it’s only the end of April.🌿

This summer, I find myself longing for a quieter rhythm. The materials for Knitted Kalevala III are nearly complete, but after such a long project, new ideas don’t arrive fully formed. They come slowly, little by little.

Maybe that’s what designing really is — not constant producing, but listening.
This spring, I want to focus especially on listening: to the wind in the trees and the birdsong.

KevĂ€t on tullut, puissa alkaa olla vihreÀÀ, vaikka on vasta huhtikuun loppu! 🌿
Huomaan kaipaavani tĂ€nĂ€ kesĂ€nĂ€ hiljaisempaa rytmiĂ€. Neulottu Kalevana III:n aineistot alkavat olla valmiit, m***a pitkĂ€t projektin jĂ€lkeen uudet ajatukset eivĂ€t tule valmiina, vaan hitaasti, vĂ€hĂ€n kerrallaan. EhkĂ€ suunnittelu onkin juuri sitĂ€ – ei jatkuvaa tuottamista, vaan kuuntelemista. TĂ€nĂ€ kevÀÀnĂ€ ajattelin erityisesti keskittyĂ€ kuuntelemaan tuulen huminaa ja linnunlaulua.
