ARTIST PRESENTATION OF YOUNG ARCTIC ARTISTS 2023:

Eva Svaneblom (Meänmaa/SWE)

Eva Svaneblom (b. 1987) is a freelance dance artist from northern Sweden, with Tornedalian background and currently based in Tromsø, Norway.

Eva has a dance education from Iwanson International School of Contemporary Dance in Munich, Germany and a masters degree in Contemporary Performative Arts from Gothenburg University, Sweden.

“As a dance artist I am interested in the situated body. The body that “becomes'' by its environment. This can be something as banal as a body moving differently through a snowstorm than in an evening sun filled living room. More subtly it can be about how one's own body tells stories about the relation to gender identity, sexuality, sociocultural background etc. I work a lot on social media and a red thread in my work is one of community and collectivity, even if I made a lot of solo work the past few years. I often play with stereotypes as my muses and my works are usually created with a fairly big portion of DIY-aesthetics.”

The installation works “Toisela laila”, “Kävelä paraatissa” and the performance piece “Kuttua” are part of Eva’s ongoing exploration project “I did it myself”. A project where she delves into a q***r Tornedalian perspective. Eva is interested in seeing what can happen in the space between, in the meeting of different aesthetics and viewpoints. With this, she is searching for an attitude - a certain tone, or atmosphere.

ARTIST PRESENTATION OF YOUNG ARCTIC ARTISTS 2023:

Astrid Ardagh (NOR)

Astrid Ardagh (b. 1997) is a mixed-media artist and filmmaker from Northern Norway. Her films and social projects immerse the viewer in experimental narratives: seeking to guide a questioning gaze towards the social codes and environmental changes that govern our lived experiences. Her work is characterised by a clear visual language, drawing parallels between community, nature and our sense of belonging in an increasingly urbanised and individualised society.

In the YAA exhibition Ardagh will present a short documentary called ‘Have you seen her’. The film is an aesthetic investigation into our perception of darkness. Set on a rugged Arctic island where the sun sinks below the horizon for two months every winter. It points an explorative lens at a remote island community, whose inhabitants know exactly at what place, on what day, and at what time they can see the sun again for the first time after the darkness of the polar night.

ARTIST PRESENTATION OF YOUNG ARCTIC ARTISTS 2023:

Alda Mohr Eyðunardóttir (FO)

Alda Mohr Eyðunardóttir (b. 1997), born and raised in Torshavn, Faroe Islands, is currently a master's student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.

Eyðunardóttir is captivated by wool. She feels a sense of "being at home" in the wool, but also recognizes a connection between working with wool and a kind of sorrow. This sorrow points to both the mortality of animals and humans, as well as the act of using the biological material of another being to keep oneself warm. She carefully addresses this woolen sorrow in her works, whether she writes knitting poems, molds a small knitted hat in bronze that her mother wore as a child, or creates larger sculptural works and installations that incorporate wool.

"In Faroese, "táttur" means 'tuft'. This possibly brings to mind an image of a tuft of hair. However, in Faroese, it can also refer to ‘one of several threads in a ribbon’, a short poem or ballad, or even a factor. In her work, Alda Mohr Eyðunardóttir has woven together three interconnecting threads. The first thread consists of a textile piece woven from Faroese yarn and fishing gear such as twine and fishing line. The second thread takes the form of a felted wall piece made from raw Faroese wool. The third thread introduces a poetic knitting pattern, delicately written on semi-transparent paper. The poem partly revolves around the theme of relocating from one's homeland to another country and starting to knit to feel at home in oneself. These three works mirror the artist’s affiliation to home and emphasize how wool serves as a fundamental material in this context. Like “táttur”, these three works come together and form a whole."

ARTIST PRESENTATION OF YOUNG ARCTIC ARTISTS 2023:

Jessica Segerberg (SWE)

Jessica Segerberg (b.1989) has been working as a freelance photographer in Sweden for the last 10 years. In her own work she has always been interested in heritage, belonging and how humans find connection. Jessica starts off from a documentary point of view and uses the everyday life events to tell a bigger story. In the end her work is a mix of photos, text and other elements. She uses her work as a way to understand, heal and investigate her own background.

Segerberg will exhibit a piece about her ancestor women from Torne Valley.

ARTIST PRESENTATION OF YOUNG ARCTIC ARTISTS 2023:

Kurant9000 (NOR)

Kurant9000 is an artist-run space and a meeting place in Tromsø. Through art exhibitions and social events, Kurant9000 is an important contributor to Tromsøs vibrant art scene. The space has existed since 2009 and has a fluid form where new generations of emerging artists run the initiative for 1-3 years. During the Young Arctic Artists event, four artists associated with the collective will invite the audience to a listening session: Andrea Conradsen, Lea Joakim Hansen Svendby, Amalie Holthen, and Anna Näumann. The work is exploring the potential of being in between through sound. Through a focused listening experience of field recordings and music. Tune your mind and body into a sensitive and open state, and let your in-betweenness grow amongst field recordings, voices and fluid sound mixes.
