We used to think finding something new meant finding somewhere new. Lately, we’ve been returning to familiar places with new objectives instead.

On this trip, one of those objectives was the mountain. A thunderstorm had other plans, and while waiting it out, we discovered something we’d walked right past on the way up.

Sometimes the best part of an adventure isn’t the objective at all.

After a client photoshoot in Missoula, I finally made time to visit the Missoula Butterfly House and Insectarium. It was such a peaceful place to sit for a while, admire the butterflies, and see if I could capture a few with my camera. I was surprised so see button quail darting around the floor. Earlier this year, I was thinking about places I’d like to visit. Most of them ended with the same thought: one day. Then I asked myself a question: What am I waiting for? The answers didn’t seem persuasive enough, so I pushed myself to take my first solo workcation.

This trip was focused on seeing the lush old-growth rainforests of Olympic National Park. A typical day looked something like waking up before sunrise to watch the first light hit Mt Olympus, spending the middle of the day working from a local library, and ending with a trail run amongst huge trees dressed in a beautiful golden light. My weekends were still mine, my work still got done, and I got to experience a place that had been on my list for more than 10 years.

As long as the answer remains “not good enough”, I’ll continue the workcations.

A few years ago, I made India ink from ash collected in the Alder Creek Burn. At the time, I planned to combine it with tree ring prints, but didn’t complete the idea between the busy summertime and a million other ideas that stretch free time thin.

I recently wrote about the process on the Beauty in the Burn project page (link in bio). Beauty in the Burn has been an ongoing project documenting the Alder Creek Burn’s recovery since 2022. Revisiting this experiment reminded me to revive the idea. It’s not perfect, but it’s fun to experiment.
