📦More ABOUT The Special Zine Collection for the

➰📖✨The Special Zine Collextion is a series of self-published titles from 17 artists and designers based in Helsinki: each of them have been invited to publish a title “carteblanche” for the Art Book Fair.

Their practices are not primarily based on publishing, in fact, most of them have never made a publication themselves. All, however, in some ways or another, have a sensibility in printed matters, or a speculative interest in it. What happens when you ask a sculptor, a fashion designer, a photographer, an illustrator, a cook, type and graphic designers, an artist-curator, filmmakers, multidisciplinary artists, and painters, to make a zine?

Including both established and blooming creatives, they have been selected for their significant impact in the Finnish cultural scene, representing its diversity and current
presence.

These titles gravitate in the search of what the act of publishing is, as a medium of expression and the multiple possibilities behind it. Driven by an excitement of making, it’s the honest ‘do it yourself’ attitude and the freedom to explore the medium, that makes the titles presented a collection of uncut gemstones.

The titles are singular, some are only one-offs works for display, others are printed in a very limited amount. They are the results of exploration and experiments over publishing, blurring, mixing, shaping it in singular ways:

The Special Zine Collection includes works of: Heta Bilaletdin , Maija Fox , talking through our bodies (Kasia Zofia Gorniak) , Helsinki Type Studio / Niklas Ekholm , Juho Huttunen , Antti Kalevi , koira1 , Heikki Lotvonen & Gladys Camilio , Hanan & Saara Mahbouba , Frans Nybacka , Iiri Poteri , Anniina Ruonala , Niklas Sandberg , Shubanghi Singh , Jaakko Suomalainen , Sakari Tervo & Risako Yamanoi .

📦More ABOUT the Rikhardinkatu Library artist books for the

📖➰✨ Rikhardinkatu library (📍Helsinki) is the first building in the Nordics designed as a public library and is currently specialised in art.

The artist book collection was founded by Emmi Martin, now retired librarian, who continues to play an important part in supporting the collection.

Several paths seemed to pull Emmi Martin towards her imminent love for artists’ books. One of them was
her position as a librarian at Rikhardinkatu library. Preceding the artist’s book collection, Emmi had already supported the formation of the
library’s gallery spaces and art lending program.

Another was the support of her life partner and artist Olof Kangas, who as a maker of artists’ books introduced her to the 1988 international artists’ book exhibition at Helsinki University Library. The exhibit was an influential turning point for Emmi and Finland’s artist’s book scene at large. Questions of what an artist’s book is, isn’t and perhaps most of all, could be, brought along a monumental shift in how Emmi viewed books in her daily work as a librarian, and it was around this time that she began collecting
artists’ books herself.

The next shift happened in Iceland, at a 1998 ARLIS/Norden meeting focused on surveying the state of artists’ book collections across the Nordics.
Emmi had been chosen to represent Finland, and her findings revealed that there were no existing public or institutional collections focusing on artists’ books. Even so, the project pulled her further into Finland’s fragmented, but steadily growing artist’s book scene. Not long after, Emmi inquired about starting an official collection within the library, and
was granted some shelf space and a starting budget.

ABOUT from TABF
“We have invited five key figures from the Nordic art book scene to curate contemporary art books and zines as well as important publications that have influenced each of their countries and to build a 4-day exclusive book store at TABF. From Norway, we have Elise By Olsen, director of the International Library of Fashion Research, which she founded herself, and from Sweden, the “Malmö Artist's Books Biennial” curatorial team, which organises art book biennials in the city of Malmö from 2018. The curators for Finland, Denmark and Iceland are Hikari Nishida, Johan Rosenmunthe and Sigurður Atli Sigurðsson, who are each actively involved in art book fairs and book-related events while running their own artistic practice based in their respective capitals. They invite us to encounter new talents and yet unknown means of expression, thus creating opportunities for us to engage in the past and present of the Nordic art book culture.

Print Gocco was a micro printing machine produced by Riso in Japan from 1977 to the mid 2000s. The technique it incorporated is something of a hybrid between screenprinting and stamping, allowing for quick and mess-free printing on the dining tables of Japanese homes. In the immortal lines of DIY punk pioneers The Desperate Bicycles: “it was easy, it was cheap – go and do it!” So come join us and become a printmaker in the blink of an eye.

📍

✍🏼✨Saturday, 21.10 / 14:30-55
Book Launch of ‘Can We Speak Between?’ by students of the MA Graphic Design at the Estonian Academy of Arts.

"Can we speak between?" is a book of student writing on ephemera from the histories of graphic design. In our conversations, the words that are spoken in between keep a conversation going. They fill in the gaps, hold things together, encourage us to continue speaking. A story is told by feelings, motions and gestures. Our “yes’” and “no’s,” our “mmmhmmms” and “what’s?” provide something for speech to carry on. We speak between. Things have already lived some times. When they were created, they had a reason and a lifetime in front of them. Then someone grabbed them, their destiny forever altered. They are found in places they are not meant to be in, just to be found and talked about again and again and again. Flyers for a rave taking place before your time, a napkin taken from a diner, an abandoned photo album, photos from an archive strewn about, a rope made from horse hair is kept in a box in the trunk of a car, birth charts, color tables, footnotes, letters, systems.

The texts in "Can we speak between?" were written during a workshop with Lieven Lahaye, the book was designed by Urtina Hoxha and Taylor ‘Tex’ Tehan. It includes texts by Shubham Aggarwal, Andrew John Beltran, Helga Dögg Ólafsdóttir, Urtina Hoxha, Oleksandra Hruzynska, Agnes Isabelle Veevo, Daria Luchinina, Pierre Satoshi Benoit, Taylor ‘Tex’ Tehan. Texts were written during a two-week workshop with Lieven Lahaye.
