PROSCRIPTION

Wheeled by a Christbutcher, a man… no, a Legend with 30 years of experience in death metal, Proscription is the culmination of his career and output. Straddling the line between death and black metal, being wholly neither, but wholly made of both, Proscription is malice and vehemence given sound. Entering the scene with The Conduit on 2020, expectations were high for the follow-up, but we don’t think many were prepared on how violently those expectations were crushed, as Desolate Divine builds immensely on the debut. Visitors of the last year’s event already know the level of vitriol their presence had. Welcome to experience the violence once more - this time playing never before heard material!

DISGUISED MALIGNANCE

Whereas their running mates, Whisper, gaze skywards for their influences, Disguised Malignance walk with their heads held high, following in the footsteps of the masters. Wearing their Cannibal Co**se and Morbid Angel influences on their sleeve, they manage to reinvent this Floridian wheel of death metal, seasoning it with enough influence from ye olde Finnish death metal to make their presence something to be savoured. Despite being a young band, they have already been touring the stages of the Old Country and will not hesitate to cave in a few heads.

WHISPER

And now, something completely different! Well, perhaps not, as we are still clearly in the realm of death metal, but this is not your daddy’s run-of-the-mill, HM-2-worship stuff. Whisper is among the new breed of bands honing their craft in Helsinki, and definitely one of the fresher takes these ears have come across in a while.

With two EPs and a demo under their belts, these guys are working feverishly on their full-length. We will be keen to see how their space-gazing, otherworldly take on the genre evolves on subsequent releases.

Phrenelith

As guests of the first edition of Kuolio may have noticed from the presence of Undergang among our headliners, we have a particular fondness for the Danish death metal royalty. Known for their labyrinthine and malevolent compositions, we are honoured to have Phrenelith join us for our little gathering. Their ability to pay homage to the classics of the genre while maintaining a keen ear for dynamics and atmosphere allows them to sound both timeless and remarkably fresh. There is a sense of purpose to their songwriting that rewards attentive ears, revealing new twists and turns with every listen.

With three full-lengths under their belt, alongside a formidable selection of shorter releases, Phrenelith have more than established their place within the Danish death metal pantheon. Their brand of dreadful, mystical atmosphere has a way of creeping under the skin, and we suspect it can bewitch an unsuspecting listener in an instant. As our Friday headliners, we expect nothing less than absolute, crushing despair and twisting madness when they take the stage.

AZATOTH

Azatoth is the first band we decided to invite back to the main event after pulverizing the audience at last year’s warm-up and leaving our jaws hanging open. We strongly feel that you, the audience, will approve of this decision once the boys start hammering out their necromaniacal ditties, which owe as much to Floridian death metal as they do to ye olde Finnish death metal, yet still manage to carve out their own vitriolic vision of violence.

At this point, their output consists of two demos, an EP, a split and, most importantly, their debut full-length, Carnal Lust of Blasphemy, which has finally seen the light of day. Their trajectory has already provided a sense of maturation along the way, and the new album shows that they have been putting that experience to good use. As with Malformed, these guys will be going places in a few short years, and once they do, you can proudly say that you saw them at Kuolio Fest II, when they were hungry and raring to go for the kill!
