WAVES OF CREATIVITY AT HAIHATUS — VALENTYN KUZAN

Meet the artists who spent their summer at Haihatus as part of the WoC project.

“I am a Ukrainian photographer working in portraiture and documentary photography. My practice focuses on memory, heritage and identity. My background also extends to literature and cultural work, as I am a co-founder of Studio 72, a creative hub dedicated to war photography and cultural memory.

Since 2016, I have been working on Cultprocess, a long-term portrait archive of contemporary Ukrainian writers. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, my practice shifted increasingly towards documenting the war and the people living through it.

From 2023 to 2025, I served as a military photographer in the 72nd Separate Mechanised Brigade, photographing service members and documenting their stories.

I came to Haihatus through the Waves of Creativity programme, hoping to become part of a new artistic environment and have some distance from the challenges of war.

On our first day in Joutsa, we visited Joutopäivät, the local summer market event, and I tasted sahti, a traditional Finnish b**r, for the first time.

At Haihatus, everyday life took place alongside artistic work. We followed the annual exhibition taking shape, met other artists and shared lunches, conversations and events with the Haihatus community.

The residency also gave us the opportunity to experience cultural life beyond Joutsa. We travelled to Jyväskylä, Helsinki and Mänttä-Vilppula, getting to know different parts of the Finnish art and cultural scene. At Joutsa Library, we also gave a presentation about our work and artistic practices.

Thank you to Haihatus and everyone involved for welcoming us and making our stay possible!”

WAVES OF CREATIVITY AT HAIHATUS — OLESIA SAIENKO

Meet the artists who spent their summer at Haihatus as part of the WoC project.

“My name is Olesia Saienko, and I am a photographer and artist from Ukraine.

During the residency, I worked on a project called “Dream and Death.” It is a nonlinear story about the contradictions and paradoxes of life, which ultimately ends in the universal human experience of dying. The processes of dying and falling asleep also have certain similarities — in ancient Greek mythology, Thanatos, the god of death, and Hypnos, the god of sleep, are twin brothers.

Thus, the project explores the dichotomies of sleep and death, life and death, love and death.

Haihatus and Joutsa are an ideal place to reflect on such a theme, as time seems to stand still there. Nature is incredibly beautiful and moving. And so are the people who are drawn to this place.

I will terribly miss the sauna and karaoke! 😁”

WAVES OF CREATIVITY AT HAIHATUS — ALINA PRISICH

Meet the artists who spent their summer at Haihatus as part of the WoC project.

"To be honest, adapting to a peaceful life was not completely easy for me. I had just arrived from a city that is constantly being attacked, and suddenly I was expected to switch into a completely different rhythm. But the people at Haihatus were incredibly empathetic, and their support helped me settle into the atmosphere and start working on my project.

One of the things that made the experience especially unique was that Haihatus was not just a residency building.

Almost everyone who was part of the community was living there during our stay. We were having breakfast together, working, talking and simply being around each other throughout the day. It made the residency feel much more like living together than simply staying in an institution. One of the most valuable parts of the residency for me was the shared lunch every day.

Because I was travelling with my daughter, the support I received as a mother was especially important to me. Mimosa, the Artistic Director , became a particularly important person for me, and her daughter is almost the same age as Ivanka. It was fascinating to watch them together, both as a mother and as an artist, because my project was also connected to childhood. Their friendship even gave something back to my work.

The peak of the residency for me was the opening of the annual exhibition. I was invited to play as a DJ, which was completely unexpected and incredibly fun.

Haihatus gave me space to work on a very personal project, but also a community around me while I was doing it. I could work, take care of my daughter, meet people, have conversations, swim in lakes, go to the sauna, listen to music and simply live.

I would happily recommend Haihatus to other artists, and hope I will have a chance to come back one day."

WAVES OF CREATIVITY AT HAIHATUS — MYKYTA BEZUS

Meet the artists who spent their summer at Haihatus as part of the WoC project.

“I had a great experience in Haihatus. This was my first international residency and my first time in Finland.

One of the best things about this place is that it is full of artistic atmosphere: many staff members are also artists, and many artists whose works were there at the Summer Exhibition Rihmasto came in from time to time, and you could talk with them to hear their experiences and thoughts on art and life.

Basically, this place inspires you to make your art. Being able to relax and not worry about everyday matters, so I can focus on the project — that’s what I’ve got here. I felt that I’m kinda in a summer camp. It affected my project and helped me to figure out what my project communicates to me.

People are really nice and they are happy to help. Risto’s concert was unbelievable, I’d like to hear it again (Risto, please record that song! 🙏). Thanks to this place, I met my lovely girlfriend Aude here, who also made an impact on my project and my life.

Thanks to this place, I got to know Finland and its wonderful people. Looking forward to visiting you again!”

WAVES OF CREATIVITY AT HAIHATUS — IEVGENIIA KUPCHAN

Meet the artists who spent their summer at Haihatus as part of the WoC project.

“My name is Ievgeniia, and I’m a Ukrainian artist working with photography, land art, and performance — but I do not limit myself only to these.

I work with a post-performance method that works very well for creating metaphors about human experience, memory, identity, perception, and contact. During my stay in Haihatus, I was able to start working on two projects, which I hope to present at the final exhibition in Tallinn.

The project “So Safe It's Silly” explores a post-traumatic way of perceiving reality through black-and-white photography of a safe environment and myself within its many layers, where I slowly dissolve into it.

“News from Home: Summer 2026” creates space for the difficult feelings connected to the news coming from Ukraine. It is impossible to get used to these news. I chose to explore this through a performative interaction with stones that seem to roll from my eyes instead of tears, and through photographic documentation.

Finland was the first stop in the programme. Haihatus became a very productive environment where I could simply be with my feelings. Haihatus became an ideal place where I could balance social life, when I needed communication, with complete privacy, which I sometimes needed to reflect on my artistic process.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that I met many friends and people who inspired me and became examples for me. Also, it was at Haihatus that, after nine unsuccessful attempts, I learned to ride a bicycle at the age of 33. Of course, with the support of my friends.

Cities have the faces of the people who live in them. That is why Joutsa is one of my favourite places in Finland. If you are reading this and understand exactly what I mean, you have already been there.

If you are reading this and feel jealous — you should come to Haihatus.”
