Lughnasadh, Wiccan year's first harvest festival 31.7.-1.8.

Lughnasadh's halfway between summer solstice & autumn equinox, it's one of the Celtic fire festivals, originally lasting at least some weeks.
A greater Wiccan sabbat, though its importance has diminished lately as the connection with agriculture has loosened.

Lugh is the god of sun, human skills – i.e. warfare, crafts, blacksmithery, poetry & magic – also god of kings and protector of heroes. Traditionally it's celebrated honoring Lugh's wedding, or races ending with a feast in memory of his foster mother Tailtiu, who died of exhaustion after clearing irish lands for farming.

Ancient Celtic Lughnasadh:
Originally celebrated on hills or by water, first grains were sacrificed by burying and ox were sacrificed. Lugh's story was performed, ox meat and crops were eaten.

Lammas, Ireland:
First sheaves of grain were cut and first bread of the crop was baked. It was taken to church for blessing > loaf mass > Lammas.
Trial marriages & temporary partnerships were made, lasting a year and a day. If there was no desire to separate, handfastings were performed.

Themes:
• enjoying earth's gifts with gratitude
• using learned skills
• light, joyful, communal celebration
• background tension: evenings getting darker, summer turning into autumn & most of the harvest wasn't collected yet
• enjoy summer now, while you still can

Magic:
• abundance, prosperity, good luck & happy homes related magic
• gratitude & harvest rituals: pay attention to how intentions have manifested – show gratitude for everything that has come true & visualise what harvest you'd still like
• bless your tools

Activities:
• If you have a garden, gather harvest & preserve it.
• Pick berries or other natural products, like flowers & hay for bouquets.
• Bake bread, cake & pie. If you don't bake, buy artisan bread.
• Homemake mead & ale, get special ale from a microbrewery.
• Have a harvest party, preferably outdoors. Games & performances are great for the program!
• Decorate your home with sunflowers & in theme colors.

Eilen, sunnuntaina 28.6 Tuskassa olivat Pakanallista keskusta edustamassa Katariina Krabbe sekä Iida Hyttinen.
Edustajamme olivat paikalla Hautaustoimisto Mikko Monosen kutsumana kertomassa festarikävijöille pakanallisista hautajaisista sekä vastaamassa kysymyksiin.

Litha, Sun Festival
2026 Summer Solstice is June 21st at 11:24am

Longest day & shortest night of the year, name of the sabbat is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word for midsummer [liða]. Most ancient cultures celebrated summer solstice, i.e. ancient Rome, Vestalia was celebrated at the same time. Litha is one of the small sabbats of the Wheel of the Year, but its significance is greater in Nordic countries.

Traditionally, bonfires were burned to strengthen the sun, as Litha is a celebration of warmth, light & life-giving power of sun. It symbolizes strength, vitality and the divine masculine. Sun God's power is at its peak at this time & the goddess, Mother Earth, makes everything grow.

Fire is central to Litha celebrations, it symbolizes the energy of sun, purification & transformation. Water is also needed for growth - hence the gods of thunder are honored during Litha too.

Magical focus:
• Gather herbs for medicinal/magical purposes
• Love and romance-related divination/magic
• All kind of magical work [fairies & other nature spirits are visible to people]
• Self-reflection, goalsetting & celebrating achievements
• Noon/dawn are typical times for Litha rituals...
• ...but in Finland it's natural to do rituals & magic at midnight as well

Finnish Midsummer:
• Traditions taken from early summer pagan celebrations make it look much like Beltane
• Ukonvakot tradition: drinking to ensure good harvest - this is taken seriously at typical Midsummer celebrations
• Leaves & branches covered the floors & flowering rowan branches on the walls
• Wild flowers, esp. lilies of the valley tied as wreaths and hung on the walls/windows. Cows received flower wreaths too!
• Dewdrops taken from fields on cloths to wipe faces with, skin diseases were cured if one rolled on dewy grass on Midsummer night
• Spells to see future grooms, love saunas: washing & sauna with flower/leaf whisks

Activities:
• Go out, pay attention to nature's beauty
• Collect herbs for magical/medicinal purposes
• Charge solar water & do traditional magic
• Make a whisk for sauna or make a wand
• Celebrate with fire by water & swim in natural waters

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Merkkituli sytytettiin, portaaleja avattiin, rituaaleja tehtiin, henkiolentoja havaittiin, eikä hauskanpitoa todellakaan unohdettu! 🔥

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Tämän reissun pieni osallistujamäärä ihmetytti ensin, m***a osoittautui juuri oikeaksi matkan alkaessa. Kiitos upeasta reissusta osallistujille. 🖤

👻 Noitapiirin matka Skotlannin Edinburghissa etenee, ja tänään pieni matkaseurueemme päätyi Edinburghin kummitteleviin maanalaisiin holveihin upean oppaamme Sophien johdatuksella. Kiitos upeasta kokemuksesta, meillä oli niin mukavaa! 🖤🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
