LUIS GISPERT | Artist’s Choice

”These new paintings started from thinking about sound, specifically the moment a note hits and the way it slowly dissolves into memory. I wanted the work to feel unstable, rhythmic, atmospheric, like signals, fragments, and color drifting somewhere between a sound system, a city grid, and a science fiction landscape.”

Gispert’s solo show is on view until Sunday, August 9.

Luis Gispert explores the aesthetics of subculture and aspiration and value in American life across mediums. In his paintings, the lifecycle of sound becomes a visual experience. Temporal structures translate into painterly forms; each painting holds the tension between impact and release, emergence and fade.

Gispert’s solo show is on view until Sunday, August 9.

Jonni Cheatwood combines oil paint, oil sticks, acrylics and textile in his works. The canvases are typically constructed of pieces of fabrics, which are unified together almost quilt-like or a puzzle. Cheatwood’s original inspiration for painting started in graffiti, moving to the action painting of abstract expressionism.

Cheatwoood’s solo show is on view until Sunday, August 9.

SAMI LUKKARINEN | Artist’s Choice

”The painting Habachtal (Emerald Valley) depicts my son Valtti, but it could also be a self-portrait, as I have the exact same neon yellow sun hat. The picture was taken last summer in Habachtal, Austria, home to Europe’s only emerald mine. On a hot summer day, we set off from the picturesque valley towards the surrounding mountain peaks and decided to take a break in the shade of the last small tree. We noticed that our water bottle was empty and that it was impossible to climb to the top. We turned back down to the valley, where a cute marmot peeked out at us from under a rock.”

Lukkarinen’s solo show is on view until Sunday, August 9.
