TERO SAARINEN COMPANY was founded in 1996, its primary aim being to use the language of dance to investigate, promote and communicate a humane worldview and basic human values. TSC also runs a teaching program teaching TERO Technique all over the world, and assists in Saarinen’s works for other prominent dance groups. In 2020 TSC moved to new premises at The Cable Factory in Helsinki, launching a

new space, TSC Studio, and a residency programme. The Company employs about 50 individuals each year, seven with permanent posts. TSC is supported by Finland’s Ministry of Education and Culture, the City of Helsinki and the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation. http://www.terosaarinen.com/

Notes from summer’s TSC Studio Residency, during which the collective Punking Diaries worked on several different projects at TSC Studio. 🧡

☁️ K.S.Q – Jérémy Gaudibert and Kaisa Nieminen developed their duet K.S.Q for the Slurps Festival at Kotka Meripäivät, utilizing the studio and the pier near Kaapelitehdas. This immersive, one-on-one performance wove together the ho******ic motifs of sailor life found in Punking and French and German avant-garde works, such as Jean Genet’s Querelle and Fassbinder’s film adaptation, with Finnish life and art, including Kotka’s maritime history and the artwork of Tom of Finland.

☁️ Courtship – Dancers Jérémy Gaudibert, Ira Wuolle, Nadja Leham, Miika Sibelius, and Kaisa Nieminen worked on the upcoming piece Courtship, to be performed at Dansbana! Amos Rex on August 17th. This playful performance explores the liberating energy of Punking. The choreography includes parade walks, intricate arm movements, communicative grooves, fabulous looks, and powerful music, all creating imaginary courtship rituals. The performance concludes with an invitation to join the dance floor and share the love.

☁️ Other – During the residency, dancers Jérémy Gaudibert, Ira Wuolle, Nadja Leham, Miika Sibelius, Kaisa Nieminen, Emmi Mikkilä, and Irina Lishchina also rehearsed punking/whacking, planned upcoming events such as the annual PPPParty, and worked on video projects and smaller gigs. One Thursday, they hosted a weekly open session attended by a group of fabulous Helsinki-based punkers and whackers of all levels and backgrounds.

Tervetuloa TSC Studion avoimille aamutunneille jälleen ensi viikosta alkaen! Syyskausi alkaa Misa Lommin aamutunneilla, joissa yhdistyvät improvisaatio, fyysiset harjoitteet ja koreografinen työskentely. Misan tunneilla harjoitellaan monipuolisesti nykytanssitekniikoita, kuten lattiatyöskentelyä, hyppyjä, painonsiirtoja, koordinaatiota, kehonhallintaa ja kehon monipuolista käyttöä. Työskentelyssä korostuvat luovuus, liikkeen virtaavuus, tarkkuus, rytmi ja ilmaisun syvyys. Ilmoittautuminen kaikille syksyn tunneille on nyt auki!

Uuden kauden kynnyksellä kannattaa liittyä TSC:n jäseneksi, jolloin voit muun muassa hankkia viiden ja kymmenen kerran sarjakortteja aamutunneille etuhintaan 35 & 60 € (norm. 50 & 95 €). A new season of morning classes and workshops kicks off next Monday with Misa Lommi’s morning classes. Misa’s sessions combine improvisation, physical excercices, a variety of contemporary dance techniques and choreographical work.
The start of a new season is the perfect time to become a TSC member. Membership allows you to purchase 5 or 10-class passes at a discounted rate. Members also get to sign up early for upcoming workshops and can purchase discounted tickets for TSC’s performances at Dance House Helsinki, Read more and join on our website.

We’re very happy to be the residency partner of Generation 2026 exhibition at Amos Rex. The featured performance artists Aura Tiira, Elli Roth, Leo Terävä & Aliina Kemppainen and Aarni Pieski and working group all developed their pieces in TSC Residencies and received mentorship from TSC’s artists.

The working group of Wild Is the Wind after the spring rehearsal period!

The premiere of this new piece by Sonya Lindfors takes place in September as part of TSC’s Triple Bill at talo. ❤️‍🔥

During the same event, you can also witness the Finnish premieres of Tero Saarinen’s duet Garden and Carolyn Carlson’s solo Room 7, performed by Tero Saarinen. Expect powerful performances, distinct movement, and reflections on humanity.

Tero Saarinen steps on the stage with Carolyn Carlson’s new solo Room 7. Choreographed for Saarinen, the piece takes a journey into the human psyche and its mysteries.

Room 7 will get its Finnish premiere in Tanssin talo as part of TSC’s anniversary Triple Bill on 22–26 September. ❤️‍ The evening also features Sonya Lindfors’ new large scale work Wild Is the Wind and Tero Saarinen’s new duet, Garden.

We’re excited to have Punking Diaries working in TSC Studio Residency for the next couple of weeks!

Punking Diaries is an open-end and collective project exploring the multidimensionality of Punking and its impact on our generation of street and club dancers in Finland. Punking is a style of dance created by gay BIPOC artists in LA clubs in the 1970s and recognized as the original inspiration for the currently trending Whacking. The project was born out of the need to sit and reflect on the complexity of this part of dance history after attending Exposé Dance Festival dedicated to Punking in Gothenburg in 2023, organized by Alyssa Chloé.

In TSC Studio Residency the collective will be working with several different projects; a duet performance KSQ at Slurps Festival at Kotkan Meripäivät, group performance Courtship at Dansbana! Amos Rex and also preparing other future events, performances and sessions to come.

This week we hosted a special Spatial Sound Workshop at our premises. 🔊

Participants immersed themselves in spatial sound composition, multi-channel audio and sound design while utilizing TSC Studio’s immersive sound system. They tested their designs across two distinct auditory environments under the guidance of TSC sound technician Vincent Masse. It’s been four days dedicated to careful listening, attunement, and the creation of unique sonic environments.

Leo Terävä and Aliina Kemppainen worked on their Generation 2026 piece, The Act of Becoming (a Ghost), during a TSC Studio Residency earlier this year. 💛

The piece originated from a long-term dream to create a stage production shaped in collaboration with the audience. It explores the potential for transformation and offers viewers a pathway to consider their own relationship with bravery and authenticity. The piece examines internal realities and the struggles of ensuring we are seen in accordance with our values.
