WHITE WALL | Anna Niskanen: Limbo 1.–24.10.2026 • Lokal Gallery + www.lokalhelsinki.com

"The moon orbits us, and together with seven others we orbit the sun. The sun, too, spins and surges. Elements circle within us, changing form as they combine, melting when warmed and becoming something else when solid, to part and join with something other.
Limbo is a collection of works based on photographs I have taken on the ground and in the sky. Hand-printed using different light-sensitive processes, these works are an ode to the fantastical clouds, eclipses, sunsets, and moments I have been offered to witness while moving from one place to another. The works are experiments in material and technique, in which I am encountering something new."

Anna Niskanen (b. 1990) is a Helsinki-based Finnish visual artist working across tangible photography, installation and trace-based sculpture. She draws inspiration from remembering places visited and photography as an archiving tool to mediate memories. She is particularly interested in the idea of a souvenir: something collected to remember a moment, place, a person with and by. She approaches the theme with an archive of photographs by layering digital and analog processes to finally create handmade prints. Niskanen generally works with cyanotype and bichromate printing but lately she has been sampling different metals and organic pigments.

Exhibition #110 Linda Linko: Not Just One 25.9.–24.10.2026 • Lokal Gallery + www.lokalhelsinki.com

“I had a long career as an illustrator before my primary focus shifted towards fine art. Although I have drawn inspiration from many sources, illustration has largely shaped the way I see the world — sometimes from a perspective that is perhaps too close-up. Illustration often plays with current phenomena and stereotypes that shift rapidly with the times. The eye must be sensitive to change and the prevailing currents of the moment, and capable of translating this “shifting code” into a form the viewer can understand. A good illustration is a deliberate sum of details. When representing people, one must be extremely precise about how things are depicted; there is a responsibility involved, too. I have engaged in numerous highly detailed discussions—for instance, about what constitutes a recognisable calf thickness for a middle-aged woman in an image.

Real life, of course, is something else entirely.
When painting, I often strive to unlearn everything I have learned.

Sometimes it is hard to let go of the details. For me, painting faces is a relaxing form of play; it allows me to depict a person in a kind of in-between state — listening, observing from the sidelines, surprised or bewildered, slightly hazy, or conflicted. Beyond control, out of the public gaze, not performing. I believe that in these undefined moments, a person reveals their most interesting self.
For we are never just one.

I begin a painting with a single thought and intentionally change direction multiple times. During the process, elements such as age, gender, colours, and moods are allowed — and indeed expected — to change. I let the painting lead the way it wants to go. I know it is finished when it strikes the right balance between the familiar and the slightly quirky.
I do not call my paintings portraits, even though I often hear them referred to as such. To me, they feel more like heads — heads resting with their own weight upon necks and shoulders, which I often intentionally leave out of the frame.

While working on this exhibition, it became clear to me that these heads often serve as the starting point for my painting process. After a break, I often begin by painting faces in watercolour; through repetition, they open up new ideas regarding colour, form, and the mood of the moment. At some stage in the process, the forms break free and take on a life of their own, becoming abstract. You could say that abstraction often begins where the heads recede; it is an endless cycle — one cannot exist without the other.

This time, I have noticed a certain sense of awkwardness — in a good way — present in my paintings. I have a figure in mind — or rather, a movement — that connects memories of an excruciating dance competition (in which I participated) with the feeling of being shy yet dressed in my best for a school spring celebration. There is something beautiful and memorable about awkwardness. Why, after all, do we try so hard to smooth out this side of ourselves?”

WHITE WALL | Henna Nuutinen: Formae 2.9.–26.9.2026 • Lokal Gallery + www.lokalhelsinki.com

“In the exhibition, my abstract sculptures have moved from the surface to the wall. A large part of the works in the exhibition have been fired in an anagama kiln and show the collaboration of flame and ash. The surprise of firing fascinates, as it is almost impossible to predict the final result of the firing in advance. In contrast, the light sculptures engage in dialogue with the dark works. The direction of the sculptures is not locked into one position, but can be positioned freely, and this one’s experience of the piece may vary.”

Henna Nuutinen (b. 1990) is an artist & designer working in Lahti, Finland. She is currently working on large ceramic sculptures dealing with themes of fragility and cohesion, reflecting on Nuutinen’s own relationship with nature. She is inspired by organic forms, structures, and colours of nature. Henna’s sculptures are often the result of intuitive construction, where the material guides the end result. The forms are organic and abstract, and are characterised by repetitive branches that eventually converge.

It’s a wrap! An enormous Thank You to all artists, visitors, customers, helpers, neighbours – you know who you are!
At First Blush at Lokal Gallery as well as in Billnäs is now over • All available works can still be found online via www.lokalhelsinki.com

Lokal returned to the idyllic 1800’s ironworks village of Billnäs at the peak of summer; this time in a new location – an old spade factory – just across the street from last year’s venue. As a continuation and a homecoming of Lokal’s exhibition A Prima Vista at 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen in June, the expanded group exhibition At First Blush is a celebration of the feeling that wells up in one’s being at the sight of a new love, with the awakening of a new season, or as an artist discovers a new expression. The theme of the exhibition is the blossoming of new life in late spring and early summer – that annual miracle. In typical Lokal fashion, the group exhibition consists largely of worlds and work ensembles that combine the traditions of fine arts, refined craftsmanship and collectible design.
