Jazz by Matisse - Day 4

"The choice of the title Jazz reflects not only the rhythm, but also the sometimes strident chords of pure colour and the sense of improvisation that prevades the entire work. "

Jazz by Matisse - Day 1

"In 1944, Matisse agreed to the request by the publisher Tériade who had been wanting to work with him on 'a book about colour' for several years. Between 1943 and 1944 he worked on a series of twenty plates created by cutting out shapes from paper paintes with gouache."

Zoom of a painting - Fra Angelico : Day 7bis

Fra Angelico started to work in Rome for the Pope from 1446. He returned to Florence in 1450 and left for Rome again in 1452. Unfortunately most of his works (especially the frescoes) were destroyed.

This Virgin and Child Throned is dated between 1446 and 1447. It was achieved by Fra Angelico and his assistant Gozzoli (1420 - 1497). At that time, this form was often used for accompanying and celebrating child birth. It is believed to be a commissioned work for a wealthy family in Rome. On the other side paints the Holy Face of Jesus.

In this late work of Fra Angelio, the artist chose the traditional gothic style. In the previous posts we have already witnessed Fra Angelico's creativity and innovation in painting. He had a perfect mastering of techniques and he switched with ease between the old and new styles, based on the artistic need.

I hope this series can give you a glance into the greatness of Fra Angelico and invite to discocer and rediscover his works.

Zoom of a painting - Fra Angelico : Day 7

In 1445 Fra Angelico went to Rome at the request of the Pope. He and his workshop worked on various projects in Rome and in Ovieto. According to the records, his workshop was well organized with assistants of different levels (Gozzoli was his first assistant), and it demonstrated an impressive efficiency and quality in ex*****on.

In 1450, Fra Angelico returned to Florence and stayed until 1452 before going back to Rome. During these two years, he completed one more altarpiece for Cosimo de' Medici, the Bosco ai Frati Altarpiece. This is the last commission he worked for the Medici family.

In this altarpiece, the wall and columns in the background indicate the influences of Antiquity that Fra Angelico received from his years in Rome.

Take a close look at the colourful faux marbling in front of the throne. This was very popular in the Toscan paintings at that time. It was not just decorative but is a serious reference to Jerusalem as the Bible mentioned that the Holy City was decorated with precious stones.

Zoom of a painting - Fra Angelico : Day 6ter

As the major supporter and sponsor of the Dominican Covent of San Marco, the Medici family had the priviledge to have a private family cell for pray.

The fresco of this cell illustrates the Adoration of the Magi. This subject was particularly popular in Toscany during the 14th and 15th century. The Medici family and other powerful noble families used this important Bible story to justify their position and power.

Fra Agnelico again painted a family portrait. Are you able to identify the Medici family members?
