INTRODUCING THE ARTIST // Sniedze Praulina

Created in honor of the Onoma cooperatives exhibition opening, Latvian composer and musician Sniedze Prauliņa crafts an ethereal, 25-minute sonic landscape. The piece is built upon audio material and field recordings gathered during her residency with Rozentāls Society in Fiskars, capturing the acoustic environment of local nature and working tools.

Blending these textures with the organic breath of the flute, vocals, and clavichord, the composition develops in a continuous, wave-like motion through the use of loopers and effect pedals. The piece embraces transparency and light, mimicking the subtle shimmer and reflections on the exhibition’s glass floor as the sound floats freely through the gallery space.

INTRODUCING THE ARTISTS // Viivi Varesvuo & Kirsi Costi Snellman

Together and individually, we are creating a body of work that consists of figures from the underwater world and the interplay of light and shadow. Our work consists of both ceramic and sculptural elements, as well as a soundscape designed and created specifically for the piece and lighting that transforms the space, creating a soothing atmosphere and emotional experience for the viewer.

The ceramic sculptures in the work, created by Varesvuo, are all white, made of either clay, stoneware, or porcelain. Countless multi-layered and multi-dimensional sculptural elements come together to form an imaginary seabed with its plants, shells, stones, and snails. The white world is constructed on a high glass tabletop.

Snellman’s sound piece is a tapestry of natural sounds and airy, undulating soundscapes. The sound piece allows for immersion in the work’s own world. As they listen to the flow of sound, visitors may find a moment to detach from the rest of the world, and the dim lighting helps them focus on the experience.

Water as an element is present both in the associations of the built world and in the soundscape.

Amidst all the hustle and bustle, one may find an opportunity to forget everything else for a moment; to calm down, perhaps let go, and find beauty for the soul and mind. The duration, meaning, and interpretation of the experience are determined by each visitor themselves.
