I pray that you are having a wonderful start to your year - may Allah bless it for you and yours!

Our deen encourages us to be optimistic, to think well of Allah (swt) and to trust that He wants the very best for us.

The Prophet (pbuh) said, “Allah the Most High said, ‘I am as My servant thinks (expects) I am. I am with him when he mentions Me. If he mentions Me to himself, I mention him to Myself; and if he mentions Me in an assembly, I mention him in an assembly greater than it. If he draws near to Me a hand’s length, I draw near to him an arm’s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed.’” (Bukhari)

“I am as my servant thinks I am.”

Let us just ponder on this sentence for a minute.

If you choose to believe that Allah (swt) is punishing you, wants you to suffer, and is withholding His blessings, don’t be surprised if you find your life full of suffering, trials and disappointment.

If, on the other hand, you choose to believe that Allah (swt) is Kind and that He has blessed you with abundance and that His plans are always in your favour, don’t be surprised to find your life full of gratitude and joy and abundance.
It’s all available.

How else would you explain those people who are tested and tried with all manner of things - poverty, hardship, illness, loss - and are still smiling, are still grateful, are still finding joy every day? It has nothing to do with their circumstances; it is all about the decision they made to focus on what they have, rather than what they don’t have.

Conversely, how about those who, from the outside, have everything - health, security, love, prestige - and yet find themselves drowning in negativity, depression and suicidal thoughts? Again, the circumstances don’t matter; it is the mindset that makes the difference.

Expecting good from Allah is a powerful mindset tool that He has given us.

Use it.
