How the Oromo values can be linked to the broader themes in Black History.

often focuses on the African diaspora, especially the experiences of people of African descent in the Americas, Europe, and other parts of the world due to the transatlantic slave trade. But the Oromo are in East Africa, so their history might be different.
However, Black History also encompasses the histories and contributions of all African peoples, right? So even though the Oromo weren’t part of the transatlantic slave trade, their struggles and cultural values could still be part of the broader Black History narrative.

; The Oromo are the largest ethnic groups in Ethiopia and also live in parts of Kenya and Somalia. Their culture is rich, and with their unique traditional system of governance, the “Gadaa” system they best exemplify key values that underpin their society and one that needs to be shared to the rest of the world.

: as an endogenous African democratic system of governance it carries an important value.
: a traditional religion, which centers around the worship of Waaqa, the supreme deity. This ties into their spiritual values, respect for nature, and communal harmony.
: which is about moral and ethical conduct.
Community and collectivism. The Oromo value the community over the individual, which is reflected in practices like mutual aid and collective decision-making.

Respect for elders,
Environmental stewardship,
Resilience and resistance,
Oral tradition and knowledge,
Gender role and balance…are some of the of the core Oromo values.
