EN: The Mudéjar style symbolises the cultural fusion and coexistence that existed for centuries across much of our country. The term refers to those Muslims who remained amongst the victorious Christians whilst maintaining their own traditions; it also represents an architectural and decorative style unique to our region, in which elements of both traditions are blended.
Whilst one cannot speak of ‘Mudejar music’ as such, this programme aims to recognise elements that are unique to, and shared by, the three cultures that coexisted for centuries. The oral transmission of much of this repertoire and the subsequent dominance of the Christian tradition currently make it difficult to find specific examples.
However, there are numerous references that point to this coexistence and share similar poetic ideals concerning love, life, honour, etc. ‘Mudéjar’ pays tribute to that shared past, to that unusual melting pot of ideas, traditions and religions, and to that exceptional cultural dialogue which gave rise to the distinctive and unique features of our music
