It is endlessly interesting and inspiring for me to soak up the local colour and activity in the places I inhabit, and being a sucker for a festival, I love the biggest party that takes place here in Valencia, 'Fallas' (the festival of fire).

There are street parties with lots of Paella cooked in the open, Churros and Buñuelos stalls (both Spanish sweets) and the giant puppets, called Niñots that are burned on the final day of the festival. It's quite a party!

So we are coming to the end of this months drawing challenge of shoes. Hope some of you have given it a go. For more challenges, please feel free to join the group by clicking the button above.

Thank you and all the best...

PS. attached are a couple of drawings of a pair of my wife's shoes (amongst others). They were a pair of Campers (made in Spain), which she bought in Australia when we lived there, and strangely we now live in Spain, though she hasn't bought a pair of Australian shoes here yet!

Also attaching another drawing of sneakers on the go I really love...

About 10 years or so ago, I exhibited for the first time in Mumbai at the wonderful Chatterjee and Lal Gallery. This is one of the pieces I showed. It was based on a series of my favourite Bollywood movies collaged in dots over prints of the deities from the Hindu pantheon. Oh the irony!

So for this months challenge, I wanted to get a little more prosaic and draw shoes. This was one of my favourite drawing challenges when I was studying art at school level because it is the discovery of such a personal journey, and of an object that so directly reflects our own physical journeys.

Of course this is a very popular subject matter, and for good reason, it's a project that we can really sink our teeth into in terms of looking at for instance all the different types of shoes we wear. Formal and informal. Sporty or simply casual. Comfortable or necessarily not so. Whether they be hob-nail boots, running shoes, ballet slippers or your ordinary every day trainers, our shoes tell very particular stories of our lives.

Feel free to join us on this new challenge if you wish to by pressing the blue button above and getting into the group.

PS attached is a set of drawings by the wonderful Andrea Joseph, and a painting by the ever popular Vincent VG...

Monthly Drawing Challenges.

If you would like to join in, click the button above and join the group. We are presently running a challenge based around the subject of windows. Looking at this everyday object in many different ways and from many different angles, in order to make art works that explore our very complex relationships with it.

The challenges will last a month, giving participants the opportunity to turn this into a project if they wish too.

Inspiration provided by a professional artist (little old me) on a regular basis, but even more important we have a vibrant and active group of artists who provide support and inspiration to others in the group.

Come on in and explore the challenge for yourself by clicking the blue button above.

Many thanks and happy creativity...

The Beauty of Off-Cuts!

The way the works that I posted yesterday were made left a lot of off cuts, partial dots that sat around neglected for ages till I finally thought I had to come up with a way to use them.

This work, and a series that went with it was the result of much procrastination, and trial and error. But when I got to where I wanted to go, the iconography of flowers was my rescue in the end, these were in memory of the culture I had left behind in England when I moved to Australia. I loved my time in Oz, but I had grown up in London and it was a cultural experience I should never forget...

Flowers Galore!

These works are from a series of collages I made for one of my first solo exhibitions in Sydney. As I explained yesterday I was working with both flowers and Japanese papers at the time and both come together in these pieces with my love of using punched paper holes.

These are really fun works to make and I love the colours and textures that these materials allow...
