Alcázar vs Cathedral: Which Should You Visit First? 🏰⛪
Only one day for Seville’s must-sees? The order matters! Here’s our local guide’s advice.
- Why ALCÁZAR first (morning): 🌞
👉🏻Cooler temps for gardens & courtyards
👉🏻Softer light on Mudéjar tiles ✨
👉🏻Fewer crowds before tour groups arrive
👉🏻More walking + exploring = better with fresh energy

-Then CATHEDRAL (afternoon): 🕐
👉🏻Mostly indoors = no heat worries
👉🏻Vast space handles crowds better
👉🏻Save Giralda tower climb for later (ramps!)
👉🏻Columbus tomb + Gothic grandeur wowed post-Alcázar

If half day only:
Alcázar = gardens, palaces, history vibes 🏛️
Cathedral = monumental scale + city views from Giralda 🌆
Pro move: Our Skip-the-Line COMBO Tour does both perfectly! Official English guides, priority access, €58.20 (13% off w/ PROMO), 100% refund up to 7 days.

✨ The Hall of Ambassadors: a golden dome full of secrets

Often described as the throne room of the Royal Alcázar, the Hall of Ambassadors is where art, power, and diplomacy met for centuries. Built by King Peter I in the 14th century, this was the space where foreign envoys were received, alliances were forged, and royal authority was displayed.

Its breathtaking gilded wooden dome is a masterpiece of Mudéjar art. Geometry inspired by Islamic tradition, Nasrid influence, and Castilian symbolism come together to create a space that feels almost celestial, a wooden sky representing cosmic order and divine legitimacy.

Arabic inscriptions praising divine protection coexist with Christian heraldry, while hidden balconies allowed the royal court to observe ceremonies unseen. Every detail tells a story of Seville as a true cultural crossroads.

🎬 Many recognize this hall from Game of Thrones, but its real history is even more fascinating.
👑 Understanding its symbolism is key to understanding the Alcázar itself.

Our guided tours reveal the meanings behind the beauty, with skip-the-line access and expert local guides.

🌊 No element has shaped Seville like the Guadalquivir River.

Flowing through Andalusia and reaching the Atlantic at Sanlúcar de Barrameda, this river transformed a landlocked city into one of the most important ports in world history.

The Romans were the first to recognize its strategic potential, establishing Hispalis as an inland port connected to the empire’s trade routes. Later, under Islamic rule, Seville became a bustling commercial hub, with shipyards, markets, and fortified towers rising along the riverbanks.

But everything changed in the 16th century. When the Catholic Monarchs granted Seville the monopoly over trade with the New World, the Guadalquivir became the artery through which gold, silver, spices, and ideas flowed into Europe. The Torre del Oro guarded maritime traffic, the Real Atarazanas built ships, and the Archivo de Indias documented an empire 📜.

🏰 The Alcázar, the Cathedral and the Giralda grew alongside the river, reflecting the political, religious and economic power of Seville at its peak.

🚤 Today, the Guadalquivir still tells that story.

Our guided tour + panoramic river cruise lets you experience the monuments shaped by the river — and the river that shaped the monuments.

👉🏻Everyone knows our meeting point is right next to the General Archive of the Indies…
but have you ever wondered what this building actually is?

The Archivo General de Indias was established in Seville to gather all documents related to Spain’s territories overseas between the 15th and 19th centuries. Today, its collection stretches over nine kilometers of shelves, holding around 43,000 files, 80 million pages, and more than 8,000 maps and drawings.

All of it connected to one of the most decisive chapters in world history: the discovery, administration.

🔔 Big news: the Reales Atarazanas de Sevilla will open to the public in October 2025, with free access from October 23 to November 2, between 9:00 and 18:00 📅🕰️

👉🏻 Atarazanas were built in 1252 by King Alfonso X as infrastructure for the war against the Nasrid kingdom of Granada and North Africa. In spanish, Atarazana is synonymous with arsenal, where the military fleet was stored in winter, a time not recommended for sailing. Covering approximately 6 hectares, it held some 30-35 galleys.

🏛️ The complex consisted of a building with seventeen naves next to a large sandy esplanade that reached the banks of the Guadalquivir River.

💡 In February 2022, renovation work began, with the idea of building a large cultural centre inside. The work was completed in October 2025, with the museum set to open in 2026.

🎬 And did you know these walls have also been a film set?
The Atarazanas were used as a filming location for Game of Thrones, recreating the crypts of the Red Keep.
Between May and June 2017, scenes from the Spanish series La Peste were also filmed here.

Stay tuned as we continue unveiling the history of Sevilla.
