At some point in flamenco… many dancers reach this stage.

You’ve learned choreography.

You know steps.

You’ve repeated them many times — often with the same music.

But when the singer or guitarist sings or plays it differently …

you realise you aren’t able to go beyond what you’ve learned.

That moment is difficult

Because it’s when you start to see that there are other ‘possibilities’ for your dance.

But you don’t yet know how to access them.

In this short video, maestro Manuel Betanzos explains this stage of transition, and how he helps students become aware of it and move through it.

Video 2 - I got Manuel explain the structure of his Caña, as an example - from his workshop at the Festival de Jerez.

Those of you who took this workshop would be familiar with the dance, perhaps recall that he asked some of you to explain to the musicians the structure. Here's his version so you can learn to do so too!
